Control Engineer - Power Systems Protection


Salary:
£30,000 - £70,000 - can look at graduates to experienced individuals

CX Squared have partnered with an engineering consultancy that is looking to rapidly expand its team with a number of permanent Control Engineers who have Power Systems Protection experience.

Role Summary


The Power Systems Protection and Control Engineer will perform fault calculations, relay settings, voltage drop, cable sizing and prepare the system protection requirements design basis report.

He/she will also be responsible to carry out Power Systems studiesand analysis deploying standard Power System Tools, to enunciate and validate the final technical design along with drawings and specifications based on electrical data analysis.

He/she will work with internal teams at the DNO, and with vendors as needed,to arrive at technical options and document them.

He/she shall interact with the end customers of the DNO and internal stakeholders for approval / reviewing of the design specifications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Stringent analysis of the present network to identify the challenges faced and to reengineer the electrical scheme to meet the techno commercial / regulatory needs, in As-Is condition, at all voltage levels from LV to EHV, holistically.
  • Experience in preparing Single Line Diagram, Key Line Drawings (SLD, KLD) and Protection drawings.
  • Ability to perform fault calculations, relay settings, voltage drop, cable sizing) and prepare system protection requirements design basis
  • Knowledge of electrical codes and standards relevant to UK DNOs
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas is required
  • Distribution (up to 132kV) electrical plant and configuration design;
  • Network planning and project development;
  • Power System modelling and analysis;
  • Transmission (132kV+) electrical plant and configuration design;
  • Demonstrable protection and control design experience with regard to DNO and TNO networks operating up to 400kV.
  • Design of adequate electrical schemes for futuristic networks including constraint analysis and operation with infusion of DER etc.
  • Carrying out important Power System analysis and studies namely Load flow and fault level analysis, Protection Coordination, Load Related Network Reinforcement, Demand Forecasting, Voltage stability etc.
  • Summarizing the results of all analytical studies and preparation of technical report
  • Deliberation of the technical design, drawings, detailed specification etc. with the customers for acceptance or to understand any deviations to match the local needs.
Desired Experience

  • Experience working as a design engineer/manager for a DNO in EHV systems or HV/LV systems will be given high weightage
  • Understanding of UK DNO network and relevant reinforcement
  • Understanding of UK DNO infrastructure strategic plan based on Ofgem Significant Code Review.
  • Preparation of Technical design reports for Distribution sector (LV up to EHV/132kV).
  • Working knowledge of Transmission and distribution systems including network protection & Re-Enforcement schemes.
  • Conducting power systems studies namely Load flow and fault analysis etc. deploying standard and reputed power system evaluation tools. Experience in using a power flow modelling tool such as IPSA, DINIS, PSSE etc will be beneficial.
  • Analysis of Power Systems studies results and validates them with the historical and ground network / assets performance parameters.
  • Familiarity with creating technical options and corresponding commercial options for the end customers of DNOs
  • Good communication skills with leadership qualities for team working culture, ability to generate techno economic reports with apt writing skills.
  • Experience of computerbased power system studies packages e.g. DigSilent is an advantage.
  • ETAP Software and Amtech software would be an advantage.
