Job Introduction


The Safety Culture Lead will work with NG Electricity Distribution (NGED) to generate value as they can operate in a business focused internal consultancy manner.

The role will engage and capture relevant business activity and provide improvements, behaviours and good practice, knowledge, insights, and initiatives to advance the Safety maturity within NGED.


Depending on experience, you may initially be appointed at a lower salary until all relevant courses and training are complete.


If you are offered a position, you will be required to successfully complete a basic DBS check that shows any unspent convictions or conditional cautions.

Main Responsibilities

  • Proactively partner all departments across NGED to support them to achieve the highest level of health and safety behaviours and maturity, providing high quality riskbased advice and interventions.
  • Take the lead on NGED wide behavioural safety programs, ensuring deep collaboration across the business from design to delivery, ensuring programs are fit fur purpose and able to sustain safety performance.
  • Proactively partner with the departments across NGED to support them to achieve their objectives by forging strong relationships with key stakeholders across the business unit, and providing high quality, consistent, riskbased advice, and challenge poor Safety behaviours, acting as a trusted advisor to build a reputation as a credible, professional, and flexible Safety professional.
  • Work with teams across NGED on the development of Safety requirements of the Safety management system, effectively communicate how to embed management system requirements and advise on the development of the business specific management systems to deliver what is required.
  • Work with teams to provide tailored, specialised solutions to business problems and improve Safety behaviours and share learnings.
  • To fully understand the business environment to provide accurate and timely support that is strategically appropriate.
  • Provide generalist Behavioural Safety support services across NGED, acting as the first point of contact for internal partners within NGED who require support with Behavioural Safety related issues, carrying out work as set by business demands and in conjunction with guidance from the Head of Safety.
  • Proactively seek information about internal and external trends to advance NGED's Safety behaviours and maturity and meet the company's Safety Ambition, ensuring that the Safety practices of the organisation are highly customerfocussed, fit for purpose, simple, advanced, and effective
  • Work at management level with external organisations such as the ENA and undertake internal and external benchmarking to drive improvement in behavioural change across the industry, establish common standards and share learning.
  • Liaise with Enforcement agencies on behalf of business.
  • Demonstrable working experience providing professional, riskbased advice, tailored to the needs of complex business operations, ideally within a large, global, or utility sector organisation. It would be an advantage to have a good understanding of National Grid's business.
  • Detailed practical knowledge and conceptual understanding of Safety legislation and Safety innovation and best practice
  • Change agent characteristics, passionate about behavioural Safety culture development & has tackled such development within previous roles.
  • Experience of working with cross industry groups and forums and with trade unions
  • Influencing and communication skills to build strong relationships at all levels of the organisation and with a broad range of stakeholders.
  • Ability to analyse complex situation and make wellconsidered decisions quickly and confidently.
  • Experience of managing projects from initiation to implementation & review
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent in an engineering discipline or suitable alternative experience.
  • Holds or is working towards technical/professional qualification such as CMIOSH, NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent experience
  • Relevant Knowledge of Safety legislation
  • Industry experience and appreciation of National Grid's wider business operations and Safety policies & maturity journeys desirable

Evidence of your qualifications will be required prior to appointment.
To be successful in this role you must be able/willing to travel across the UK & have worked on similar Maturity & Safety Behavioural development programs
