General Optical Council
The General Optical Council is the regulator for optical professions in the UK. We currently register approximately 33,000 optometrists, dispensing opticians, student opticians and optical businesses.

Our purpose is to protect the public by promoting high standards of education, conduct and performance among the optical professions.


Applicants for this role must be an optometrist and registered with the General Optical Council (GOC) throughout the duration of the appointment.

The applicant must have been registered with the GOC for at least five years.

  • To record the recommendations on how to address deficiencies, together with the reasons for those decisions, in the format required.
  • To advise on appropriate content for additional training and development to meet any identified deficiencies against the UK standards.
  • To work collaboratively with GOC staff and other assessors to identify the information required to make an appropriate recommendation and participate in monthly teleconferences to discuss and agree assessment outcomes.
  • Conduct virtual competencybased interviews with applicants.
  • To participate in annual training in person at the GOC premises.
  • To work with GOC staff to review and develop the policies and processes supporting this role, with a flexible approach and adaptability to changes in policies and processes.
  • To be available Monday to Friday between 95 for 20 hours a month for the purpose of conducting assessment interviews, as and when required.

Remuneration:
£45 per hour - This is a self-employed independent contractor role
