Job Purpose

  • Promote culture of a health, safety and environmentally considerate employer. Work to ensure the site complies with all statutory and Company requirements enabling a safe work place. Act as site expert to ensure projects and strategies include full HSE considerations.
  • Understand, challenge and seek to improve health, safety and environmental standards on site in line with legislative requirements, including Environmental Permit and "best practice" to drive a continuous improvement philosophy in all areas on site.
  • The job holder is a key member of the Site Management Team, continuously striving for improvement, best practice and driving the safety culture, including behavioural aspects of Health & Safety.
  • The job holder will be expected to spend time working on all shifts and travel between sites as required.

Principle Accountabilities

  • Formulate, implement and review Safety, Health and Environmental policies and procedures to ensure that they promote desired workplace culture, safeguarding the business and its people.
  • Formulate a SMART HSE plan which identifies key milestones through the financial year, which includes objectives and targets.
  • Advise site management on legal compliance and best practice ensuring all current legislation is complied with and future legislation is understood and planned for.
  • Monitor the workplace to ensure that current control measures are meeting requirements and identifying opportunities to improve employee and/or environmental safety.
  • Analyse data and trends to formulate HSE KPI's and ensure appropriate action plans are developed and implemented.
  • Liaison with enforcement agencies, insurers, trades union representatives, suppliers, contractors and any other external bodies to ensure that site and/or business requirements are met.
  • Ensure that risk, safety and environmental management systems are robust, minimising potential financial losses to the business.
  • Manage the Site Health, Safety & Environmental Management Systems to the relevant standards.
  • Ensure environmental complaints are dealt with in a professional and timely manner.
  • Ensure all health, safety and environmental compliance reports and collated and submitted in a timely manner.
  • These are the key daily tasks, not a comprehensive list of all tasks undertaken by the jobholder. Flexibility is required by the business & this will be agreed with Canning HSE Manager.
  • All employees should carry out their duties in a responsible manner giving due consideration to Safety, Environmental & Quality procedures, which are part of the Integrated Management System.

Qualifications/Experience

  • NEBOSH General Certification or equivalent (minimum), Diploma or equivalent (desirable).
  • IEMA Environmental qualification or similar
  • Extensive experience of working as HSE Manager within an FMCG business.
  • Experience of managing people and dealing with trade unions.
  • Experience of dealing with external bodies such as the Environment Agency, BSI, Local Authorities.
  • Experience of training development and delivery, including IOSH
  • Demonstrate excellent decision making ability with strong quality and people management skills
  • Understanding of ISO 14001 and ISO4500
  • Must have in depth knowledge of HSE law and policy.
  • Demonstratable Continuous Professional Development (CDP) via relevant accreditation bodies such as IOSH, IEMA, IIRSM etc.
