12 Months Fixed Term - 11 PA Consultant Haematologists


Applications are invited for a 12 month Fixed Term Locum Consultant Haematologist to undertake 10 PA's at Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust with an additional 1 PA to include on-call commitments.

The post is available with immediate effect.

It is anticipated that this post will be made substantive soon afterwards through the appropriate recruitment process.

A Consultant wishing to work less than 10 PA's will also be considered for the post. Modification of the job content would be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with colleagues.

The department is well supported by specialist nurses in haemato-oncology, blood transfusion and anti-coagulation. There are 2 Specialist Trainees on the South West London training programme and a Core Trainee in medicine.

The department has an excellent record of participation in clinical trials, and benefits from the support of a dedicated research team linked to the NCRN.

The principal duty of this post is to provide a comprehensive Haematology service to patients.

  • To comply with the GMC's guidance on 'Good Medical Practice' at all times.
  • To ensure that patient confidentiality is maintained at all times.
  • To undertake duties as defined within the attached job plan in so far as practicable and in agreement with your Clinical Director.
  • To be responsible and managerially accountable for the reasonable and effective use of Trust resources that you use and influence, and professionally accountable to the Medical Director.
  • On commencement to ensure personal attendance at the Trust's corporate Induction (or arranged Consultant Induction).
  • To participate in the Trust's Statutory & Mandatory training programme.
  • To be responsible for the Clinical Management of in and out patients under your care.
  • To demonstrate flexibility according to departmental requirements after discussion with the Clinical Lead.


We are an integrated health and care Trust, providing in partnership with local GPs, local mental health services, community providers and local authorities an ever increasing range of community services.

These include adult community health, sexual health and children's therapies.

These services are run as partnerships that we host, Surrey Downs Health and Care and Sutton Health and Care, and are at the forefront of joining together health and care for local people and are the future direction of travel for the NHS.

We also run a GP practice in Leatherhead in partnership with a local GP.


We host and run some exceptional hospital based services including the outstanding rated South West London Elective Orthopaedic Service and the largest nephrology service in the UK, that isn't co-located with a transplant service.


Specific Duties of this post:


  • The appointee will contribute to the clinical care of patients referred to the Haematology Department at both St Helier and Epsom General Hospitals.
  • Participate in 1 Outpatient clinics per week at St Helier.
  • The appointee will have an office with own desk and personal computer.
  • They will have access to a microscope, including 2 and 6 headed microscopes for teaching purposes.
  • Dedicated secretarial support is provided by shared medical secretaries/patient pathway coordinators.
  • Responsible for advising all laboratory users, including general practitioners, on general haematology problems, as required.
There will be an opportunity to review the division of responsibilities within Haematology once an appointment is made.

The final job plan will reflect the agreed division between all the Consultants and the post holder's area of expertise.
