Background


Co-STARS is a co-production study developing a mental health training package in collaboration with young people from Black African and Black Caribbean diaspora with experience of mental ill health.

By empowering young people with lived experience, the training hopes to reduce stigma and improve understanding about mental health, as well as provide appropriate signposting to bridge the gap between communities exposed to multiple disadvantages and health services.

We will also co-produce an e-learning course for health and social care professionals to raise greater awareness of the structural issues faced by the Black African and Caribbean communities, with the goal of improving quality of care and practice.

The project is funded by The University of Birmingham as part of the Enhancing Research Culture Institutional Fund.

We are also collaborating with Forward Thinking Birmingham, a mental health service which is part of the Birmingham Women's and Children's Trust.


Role Summary
The Peer Researcher will support all aspects of the project delivery. This will involve close liaison with charitable partners, community organisations, as well as health and social care organisations.

The peer researcher will support the recruitment of participants for the co-design workshops, facilitate the workshops, and help to produce the training material.

The peer researcher will also be closely involved in the outputs of the project.

The position is for one day a week with an option to work flexibly.


Main Duties
The responsibilities may include some but not all of the responsibilities outlined below.

  • Facilitate workshops with young people and professionals
  • Work in close partnership with various community organisations
  • Present research outputs
  • Undertake administration arising from research
  • Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines
  • Help shape the research from a lived experience perspective
  • Conduct literature reviews with support from the team
  • Assist with qualitative data analysis
  • Be comfortable with being supported to write academically
  • Facilitate and coordinate meetings with other young people with lived experience from the community
  • Represent the Co-STARS project at events
  • Organise feedback events
  • Submit proposals for future conferences on behalf of Co-STARS
  • Effectively communicate with different partners such as community organisations and mental health services
  • Attend conferences for learning oppo
