    Overview

    The Design Museum's Development department has an opportunity for a skilled and enthusiastic Senior Development Manager to join its busy and successful Philanthropy team. The role is a key one within the Development team and is responsible for growing and maintaining relationships with high level supporters. They will work directly with the Head of Philanthropy, Director of Development and senior volunteers and Trustees.

    The ideal candidate will ideally have experience of working within the museum or cultural sector and a proven track record of securing five and six figure gifts. They will be a dynamic and highly organised individual who wishes to play a hands-on role in growing income by cultivating and engaging new and existing supporters. They will be highly motivated with the ability to work independently and an appetite to develop their own fundraising skills whilst contributing to the aims of a busy team.

    Job scope

    The post holder will work closely with the Head of Philanthropy and Development Director to deliver an ambitious individual giving strategy to develop and grow this increasingly important income stream for the museum. Growing philanthropic giving from individuals is a key priority in the coming years and this post will play a critical role in developing and achieving this aim.

    Working proactively to develop and manage individual donor relationships for the museum, strategically, creatively, and resourcefully, the appointed candidate will grow fundraising opportunities to drive forward financial growth. They will line manage the Development Executive.

    Job description

    Income growth

    • To support the Development Director, Head of Philanthropy, and senior volunteers in identifying, initiating approaches, and securing gifts of four, five, and six figures with a view to growing income for the museum.
    • To develop dedicated supporters' circles for specific projects.
    • To support the Development Director and Head of Philanthropy to develop legacy and core fundraising.

    Donor management

    • To nurture and cultivate donors to maximise their long-term giving to the museum.
    • To manage the development of an annual programme of events and unique opportunities, devised and delivered in collaboration with the Development Executive.
    • To work with the Development Director and Head of Philanthropy to develop and manage the network of Trustees and Senior Volunteers and to support and implement approaches to key prospects.
    • To develop individual stewardship plans, ensuring donors are engaged with the work of the museum.
    • To put in place and implement a plan of high level, highly targeted cultivation and stewardship events for the Museum and to ensure timely and effective follow up to all invitees.
    • To ensure all contact with donors is appropriately recorded on the organisation's CRM system.
    • To network effectively across the organisation to ensure that senior management and other colleagues are kept abreast of relevant department, to enable them to assist in the fundraising process as necessary.
    • To work with senior staff and Trustees on initiatives to mobilise the support of the design community for the museum and fundraising.

    Prospecting, research and reporting

    • Undertake research and development for funding prospects and manage a personal donor and prospect portfolio.
    • Know and understand the longer-term financial strategy of the organisation and work with the Finance team and Head of Philanthropy to ensure the appropriate identification of funding needs and alignment of budgets.
    • Undertake rigorous financial record keeping, and lead on Gift Aid claims.
    • To develop detailed action plans, timetables, and responsibilities aligned to the fundraising strategy for each identified target audience.
    • To prepare reports on income generation activity as required for internal and external reporting.

    Communications

    • Working with the Marketing and Comms team, develop the individual giving fundraising presence on the website and in all digital communication.
    • Working with the wider Development team, liaise regularly with curators and other colleagues to understand funding needs and opportunities.
    • Manage existing relationships with major donors to ensure that funders receive regular updates in compliance with donation agreements as appropriate.
    • To ensure that the fundraising database is utilised appropriately, keeping information up-to-date and producing a range of essential reports.

    People management

    • Lead and inspire direct the Development Executive to achieve the highest level of performance and develop their skills and talents to enable them to reach their full potential.

    Experience, skills, and knowledge

    Experience

    • Successful track record of working as part of a fundraising team to achieve significant income targets.
    • Demonstrable evidence of a strategic, proactive, and creative approach to fundraising and development of fundraising opportunities.
    • Experience of major gifts fundraising and soliciting four, five or six figure sums.
    • Experience of and confidence in soliciting face to face donations.
    • Proven experience of building long-term effective relationships with high level individual stakeholders or senior volunteers.
    • Experience of working with a Patrons and/or membership scheme and growing income through these streams.

    Skills

    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • A strong track record of building effective and productive relationships with people at all levels.
    • Highly motivated, organised individual with a demonstrable record of working in an efficient, accurate and timely manner.
    • Excellent interpersonal and negotiation skills with the ability to develop mutually beneficial relationships.
    • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with a team.
    • Numerate, with ability to prepare detailed financial analysis and reports.
    • IT literate, including intermediate knowledge of all Microsoft packages.

    Knowledge

    • Knowledge of Gift Aid, VAT and GDPR.
    • Experience of using CRM systems efficiently.

    Terms and conditions

    Salary: up to £45,000 per annum, dependent on experience

    Holidays: 25 days + Christmas eve (museum closed) and Bank Holidays

    Hours: 35 hours / 5 days per week

    Location: 60% on-site at the museum, 40% remote working
