    Devon County Council background
    Description

    Required to start September 2024.

IES's mission is to provide excellence in education within an international perspective. The International Education Systems group (IES) promotes the development of young people who will have the capacity to contribute proactively to the on-going work towards a better world.

St John's School is an independent day and Boarding school for boys and girls, from Nursery to 16, overlooking the sea in the beautiful Regency town of Sidmouth in Devon. We are a relatively small school which caters for around 180 local day students combined with a contingent of international Boarders from more than 10 countries around the globe. The majority of our Boarders are native Spanish speakers, arriving for a term from our sister schools across continental Europe, South and Central America. Their Mathematics is usually well up to our level, but EAL may potentially slow initial development.

Whilst not 'Head of Department' (such a title does not exist), the successful candidate would be expected to oversee and co-ordinate the KS3 & KS4 curriculum; a teacher is already in post to teach Years 7 & 8. You should be a dedicated, enthusiastic and suitably experienced Mathematics teacher, able to inspire students across the School, initially from Year 9 through to GCSE (Edexcel syllabus).

At St John's, Mathematics is taught using a mixture of textbooks, Sparx software, and there is a class set of iPads dedicated primarily to Sparx Mathematical teaching.

Despite being a non-selective school, academic expectations in the school are high, but we also believe that our students' ability to communicate successfully, to consider the needs of others and to show drive, empathy, leadership and initiative are all attributes that will help them achieve success throughout school and later university; as well as make a significant contribution to society in later life.

This post provides an excellent opportunity to work in a high quality environment and to become part of a highly motivated and visionary team. Our school land extends over many hectares and has its own stream, woodland, horticultural area, Forest School, greenhouse, along with customary sports pitches, tennis courts, indoor/outdoor heated swimming pool and sports hall. All these facilities lend themselves to an outdoor learning environment with creativity at the forefront.

The School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. Applicants will be required to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

We are very keen to recruit this position and will assess applications as they are received.
