A number of exciting opportunities are available within the Council's Accountancy team.

If you are looking for that next step in your career development and want to be part of a professional, motivated and supportive team, then one of these opportunities might be the one for you.

In total, there are three Finance Business Partner roles that are available.

These are based within the Budget Strategy Team, the Schools Finance Team and the Place & Corporate Business Partnering Team.

The Budget Strategy role will see the successful individual getting involved in the annual budget setting process and supporting with the development of the medium term financial plan.

This will involve the preparation of detailed budget estimates, collation and review of financial pressures and savings proposals from service areas, and assisting with the compilation of public reports and appendices.

In addition, this role will be involved in the annual closure of accounts and preparation of the Statement of Accounts, assisting with the compilation of notes to the accounts and supporting with the annual external audit process.

The Schools Finance role will see the successful candidate being part of the team that provides financial support and business partnering services to individual schools.

Each team member has a portfolio of schools that they work with, providing assistance with budget setting, budget monitoring, year-end processes and general financial advice and support.

In addition, team members get involved with supporting schools in financial difficulty and assisting with the formulation and development of plans for schools to return to a sustainable financial position.

The role in the Place & Corporate Business Partnering team will see the successful individual become part of a team that provides support to a wide range of services within the Council, including corporate "back-office" services, as well as visible front-line services.

In line with the business partnering approach that has been adopted across the team, you will be working closely with a portfolio of services, assisting them with full range of activities that comprise the annual financial cycle.

In addition, this role will be involved in the Council's Transformation Programme, providing support for specific projects that are critical to the Council's long-term financial sustainability.

The ideal candidate will possess a recognised accounting qualification or, if not, significant experience in an accountancy role.

You will understand the nature of, and challenges facing, a local authority in Wales and the public sector, more generally.

An individual with an enquiring nature and problem-solving mentality is what we're looking for, as well as someone who is an effective communicator and is comfortable working with complex financial information.

If you have experience of providing business partnering services, then that would be even better.

For example, a hybrid approach to work is common across all services, with individuals experiencing a balance between office-based and home-based working, based on service requirements.

Other flexible working arrangements are on offer and employees are offered support to maintain a healthy work-life balance.

Part of this offer includes a generous annual leave entitlement and the option to purchase additional leave, should that be required, as well as other employee benefits.

We welcome applications for all our jobs in either Welsh or English. An application submitted in Welsh will not be treated less favourably than an application submitted in English.

Newport City Council is committed to working towards its workforce being more representative of the population that we serve and particularly welcomes applications from people from the minority ethnic communities represented (or living) in the city.
