    Job overview

    We are looking to recruit an experienced Scrub Theatre Practitioner to work 37.5 hours, across 7 days, including night shifts.

    Here on the Wigan site we undertake adult and paediatric elective and emergency surgery the candidate would need a wide range of speciality experience including ENT, Dental, Urology, Gynaecology, Colo-rectal, General surgery, both open and laparoscopic techniques, Orthopaedic Trauma and Obstetrics.

    Our theatre teams work closely with some of the region's leading consultants and are exposed to the latest innovative, evidence -based clinical techniques

    The successful candidate needs to be a hard working, dynamic and committed individual with a sound understanding of colo-rectal surgery to lead our integrated laparoscopic operating theatre but with a wide range of experience within the surgical specialities, demonstrating sound leadership skills, principles, which reflect an awareness of local/national policies.

  • Demonstrate budgetary control, order requests for supply of materials required within agreed budget.
  • Engaging the theatre team to ensure effective and efficient use of funded theatre time
  • Adhere to Trust policies and maintenance of the professional Code of Conduct.
  • Main duties of the job

  • Assist in the management of the day to day resources to enable the support and assistance of the multi-disciplinary team in the delivery of all aspects of patient care and accept the responsibility and accountability for the performance outcomes
  • Participation in managing effectively and clearly identifying what is required of others, setting goals and targets and providing accurate feedback on performance roles and responsibilities.
  • To maintain a supportive learning environment enabling the team to meet the evolving needs of the service, assist in budgetary and stock control to ensure the provision of a high quality and cost effective service.
  • To provide a high standard of patient care and skilled expert assistance in all specialities and areas as required.
  • Act as an ambassador for the department in professional settings.
  • Be accountable for the standards of practice within the theatre team promoting a professional patient centred approach to care.

    Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Acting as a resource of specialist professional knowledge bases for the team, through application of theory in practice.
  • Assisting with promoting the delivery of evidence based patient focused care.
  • Deputise in the absence of the Senior Team Leader when required
  • Working closely with own team, theatre co-ordinator, senior team leader and matron/theatre manager to promote good work relationships with all members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Contributing to the effective and efficient utilization of theatre resources identifying shortfalls and liaising with senior team leader / theatre co-ordinator.
  • Identifying and implementing Cost Improvement Programmes within the service.

    Qualifications

    Essential criteria

  • Registered Nurse/ODP with current NMC/HCPC registration.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.
  • Academically accredited post registration theatre scrub / anaesthetic / PACU qualification, as appropriate to role
  • Mentorship/teaching or equivalent experience
  • Desirable criteria

  • Degree/Diploma
  • Leadership or equivalent.
  • Management qualification.
  • Mentorship or equivalent
  • Surgical First Assistant qualification.
  • Vocational assessor qualification – D32/33/A1 award.
  • Experience

    Essential criteria

  • Extensive perioperative experience in scrub/ anaesthetics or post – anaesthetic care, as appropriate to role.
  • Evidence leadership skills / experience.
  • Current teaching and assessment skills.
  • Evidence of implementing change in clinical practice.
  • Desirable criteria

  • Experience of auditing standards of care.
  • Extensive leadership and junior management experience.
  • Proven record of change management.
  • Competent in the use of intraoperative cell salvage.

  • Sound understanding of principles of Clinical Governance (NatSSIPs, Risk Management & Audit) relating to perioperative practice.
  • Sound knowledge of factors affecting efficiency in the perioperative care.
  • Specialist clinical knowledge within own discipline of perioperative practice, as appropriate to role.

  • Knowledge of a broad range of surgical specialties and disciplines of perioperative practice i.e. scrub anaesthetics and recovery.
