Applications are invited for a full time (10 PA) new consultant post in immunology at East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust.

The post is based at the William Harvey Hospital, Ashford, Kent.


East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust, with links to the University of Kent and Canterbury Christ Church University, was established on 1st April 1999 and manages three acute district general hospitals (at Margate, Canterbury and Ashford) with two supporting hospitals (at Dover and Folkestone).

The Trust was awarded University status in August 2008 and Foundation status in April 2009.

The Trust is one of the largest in the country, employing over 7000 people and serving a local population of approximately 700,000.

The Trust provides a full range of local services across its sites and some specialist services including renal medicine, haemophilia, neurology and vascular surgery.


  • A £10,000 recruitment premia will be paid on commencement and £10,000 after 12 months' service. To be repaid (pro rata %) if you leave within 12 months of either payment.
We are seeking a dynamic individual for this exciting opportunity to establish a clinical immunology service in East Kent.

The appointee will be expected to help and oversee provision across all areas of immunology (allergy, immunodeficiency and laboratory immunology).

A busy (more than 250,000 tests per annum) and broad laboratory immunology service operates from our Ashford laboratory, supported by a team of specialised biomedical scientists.

The immunology laboratory currently operates within the management of the clinical biochemistry service, with clinical oversight through an SLA with St Georges Hospital.

We provide laboratory immunology services to the whole of Kent and the service has full UKAS ISO15189 accreditation.

There are currently no clinical immunology services offered within Kent and Medway (population 1.8 million) and this new post represents an exciting opportunity to develop and expand such provision.

The Pathology Department in East Kent is committed to innovation and quality improvement. There will be opportunities to introduce new services and different ways of working.

Participation in research is actively encouraged, including both national portfolio studies and collaborative scientific research in conjunction with local academic institutions such as the University of Kent and the Kent and Medway Medical School (KMMS).

You will be supported in developing as a clinical leader and will have the opportunity to take on key leadership roles.

East Kent Hospitals is an active partner within the Kent and Medway Pathology STP (South 8 STP footprint).


As a teaching Trust East Kent Hospitals plays a vital role in the education and training of doctors, nurses and other health professionals, working closely with local universities and King's College, University of London.

The Kent and Medway Medical School opened in 2020 providing clinical training across all hospitals in Kent.

The post attracts 10 PAs.

The post-holder will have full GMC registration, will be a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists or equivalent, and be on the Specialist Register or within six months of receiving the certificate of completion of training (CCT) at the time of the interview.
