We have an exciting new opportunity for a Head of Financial Control based at our Head Office in Central Birmingham.

This role will establish a highly effective Financial Accounting and Shared Services function within the business.
The successful person will be a key member of the finance leadership team, reporting to the Finance executive director.

You will provide proactive support to the Executive Finance Director on all areas of Financial Accounting, Treasury, Shared Services, Retail Accounting and Compliance and controls over financial reporting.

You will also be responsible for driving change through strategic leadership and continuous improvement to enhance quality and business practices.

You'll be responsible for maintaining AWC's financial authorities and reviewing and challenging financial controls across the rest of the business, including developing and implementing proposals to improve controls as appropriate.


What is the purpose of the job?

  • Lead and manage the establishment and transition to a combined Shared Services, Retail Accounts and Compliance team
  • Lead the production of Statutory Accounts and all external reporting to HMRC, Companies House, RPMI and other third parties to ensure all deadlines are met
  • Management of the Treasury function through the Financial Accounting Manager including cash flow forecasting, taxation and insurance / bonds
  • Subject matter expert for technical accounting matters within the business
  • Management, control and development of transactional finance systems to ensure time critical objectives are achieved, robust processes are controls are maintained and reviewed
  • Ensure the compliance of financial controls within the business ensuring all transactions are appropriately authorised and that processes are documented, controlled and evidenced
  • Lead and manage the external audit process
  • Facilitate the process of internal audit throughout the business to provide confidence in internal controls, whilst safeguarding the financial and nonfinancial data across AWC
  • Support the Head of FP&A in the budgeting and forecasting process
  • Undertake specific projects, working groups or other duties as required by the Executive Finance Director in order to develop or enhance value delivered to internal or external stakeholders
  • Benchmark processes by finding, learning from, and using best practice (from other organisations, sectors, groups, and individuals)
  • Support and deliver continuous improvement opportunities, actively seeking to continually improve and develop all aspects of finance reporting

Experience, Skills and Knowledge

  • Financial reporting experience preferably in a similar size organisation
  • Experience of managing and improving financial control
  • Experience of leading and motivating a team through change
  • Excellent interpersonal skills communicating and leading at all levels of the organisation; constructively challenging as necessary
  • Influencing skills and networking skills at all levels of the organisation
  • Experience of forging crossfunctional relationships at all levels
  • Experience to drive and implement change in systems, processes, and structure at a senior level
  • Knowledge of best practice control procedures and IFRS accounting
  • Team management experience

Qualifications & Training

  • Qualified practice trained accountant with extensive PQE ideally in a similar sized business
  • Prior experience of leading audits and ensuring rigorous financial controls are maintained
  • Extensive ERP systems experience (preferably SAP and Hyperion)
  • Strong UK GAAP accounting knowledge
