    Highways Operative – Chargehand

    Location : Rossendale Depot OL13 0BB – Whalley Depot BB7 9RW (but may be required to work at various Locations throughout Lancashire)

    About the Role

    Lancashire Highway Operations is responsible for the direct delivery of all highways related schemes across the County made up of 4300 miles of road, 151,000 streetlights and 2955 bridges.

    We have an exciting opportunity for enthusiastic Chargehands required to be part of a team assisting with the provision of maintenance and construction of roads, footways, drainage systems and associated street scene works within the guidelines of a safe working environment. This will be an opportunity to support the maintenance and enhancement of the highway network and provide long term benefits for residents, visitors and businesses in Lancashire.

    Specifically, the role involves driving and operating vehicles, plant and machinery including mechanical excavators, powered light plant such as concrete mixers, portable pumps, portable traffic lights, hydraulic breakers, cut off saws, ride on rollers, pedestrian rollers, compactor plates, preparing and laying materials including asphalt, concrete, kerbs and paving units to maintain and improve the highway network. Compliance with site plans and health and safety legislation and completing records on handheld IT equipment. We also require someone who can commit to taking part in out of hours emergency call out and winter maintenance standby.

    This role will primarily focus on delivering the Authority's revenue and capital drainage programme of works, other types of work including maintenance schemes including road reconstruction and associated drainage and kerbing works, highway and footway re-surfacing schemes and general highway maintenance including reactive pothole and masonry repairs. The post holder may be required to work on other aspects of highway's schemes as directed.

    The candidate will hold a current full driving licence with significant experience of working within the highway construction and maintenance sector. As this role involves working on the highway network, we also require someone with an excellent awareness of health and safety legislation and traffic management systems pertaining to highways construction and maintenance.
