    We have an exciting opening for a Senior Research Manager for our Research for Patient Benefits Team (RfPB) at the NIHR, responsible for overseeing the strategic direction of research initiatives.

    About Us

    The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) is funded by the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC). We work in partnership with the NHS, universities, local government, other research funders, patients and the public.

    The NIHR RfPB Programme provides funding for high quality health and social care research in the NHS in England, and allocates funding on a regional basis, for project grants of up to £500,000 and 36 months in duration. The team currently manages a portfolio of over 1,300 projects and delivers three funding competition cycles per year.

    About the Role

    Reporting to the Assistant Director, this fixed term role will involve overseeing some of the team's commissioning and/or monitoring activities and will require a strong leadership style, along with the ability to work collaboratively with other Senior Programme Managers.

    The post provides the opportunity for exciting external liaison, with interfaces to UK Government, academia, industry and the clinical community.

    Job Description

    • Overall responsibility of the team's commissioning and/or monitoring activities
    • Contributing to and leading strategic programme and departmental initiatives
    • Attending regional advisory committee meetings in a supervisory capacity
    • Act as a representative of RfPB in NIHR cross cutting working groups
    • Operationalising project work; assisting in the preparation of programme reports
    • Line management of up to three members of staff
    • Monitoring the quality and timelines of the work of Research Managers

    Qualifications & Experience

    Required

    • A degree in biomedical, health or social sciences
    • Experience of grant management
    • Experience of working in a research management environment, within a healthcare setting
    • A track record in management of projects and programmes
    • Excellent analytical and complex problem solving skills, with a solution based approach

    Desirable

    • A MSc / PhD in a medical, scientific, or social discipline
    • Knowledge of the UK's health and care research landscape
    • Line management and staff development experience

    Salary & Benefits

    £45,700 to £48,300 PA

    NB: This is a 12 month FTC position, with the strong possibility to go permanent.

    This is an office based, home working (hybrid) role with an expectation for all employees to attend our offices a minimum of 1 day a week, 4 days a month, which might increase, subject to team requirements.
