    Job summary

    The post holder will support the Named Nurse to ensure that the organisation meets its responsibilities to Looked after Children as set out in national legislation and guidance. The post holder will report to the Named Nurse but will take lead responsibility for:

    The organisation and management of a defined caseload of Looked After Children. This will include Children and young people under 16 years not in mainstream education, young people over 16 years and through transition to leaving care, Children in residential care or those considered harder to reach.

    The co-ordination of health assessments, planning and implementation of individual healthcare plans, maintaining appropriate documentation and records and undertaking clinical audit and quality assurance within this specialist area to support future service development.

    Main duties of the job

    Managing the Caseload for 16+ Cared for Children.

    Ensuring that there is a seamless care pathway for children moving into permanence, adoption, or leaving care.

    Working with the Designated and Named doctors for Looked After Children to ensure Initial health assessments are completed.

    Proposing and contributing to the review and development of existing information management systems.

    Proposing and contributing to the development of policies and procedures, taking the lead in areas identified by the Named Nurse.

    Contributing to the development and reporting of key LAC performance indicators to assess compliance and improve health outcomes.

    Advising on improvements to current LAC arrangements through, analysis and audit, reporting and suggesting procedures to enhance the safeguarding decision-making processes across the health economy.

    Ensuring timely and accurate information analysis and reporting to the Named Nurse on agreed areas of work.

    Participating in relevant internal and external working groups and provide advice, expertise and support where requested. Represent the NCA at multiagency meetings as delegated by the Named Nurse.

    Provide relevant and timely contributions to reports as requested by the Named Nurse.

    Ensuring that leaving care summaries are made available to care leavers and their GP.

    Job responsibilities

    To ensure processes and practices are in place for LAC and care leavers to receive appropriate health oversee and ensure the assessment, planning and evaluation of evidenced based health care provision within a changing environment.

    To develop, plan and organise innovative and new ways of working with highly complex and vulnerable children and young people.

    To work in line with NCA policies, guidelines and standards.

    To ensure and maintain a high professional profile and role model for nursing and health care services, reflecting the importance of a public health approach alongside multi agency partners.

    To work effectively and develop professional relationships across health and social care to ensure care is integrated and appropriately meets the needs of children and young people as individuals in a complex and challenging system.

    To ensure the effective management and utilisation of resources, equipment and finances

    Line management responsibility for LAC administrative staff and other junior staff as needed and delegated by the Named Nurse.

    This vacancy is open to those who have a current NMC PIN to practice as an Registered Nurse or Midwife in the UK, or those who are currently enrolled on a course which means they expect to receive their full NMC PIN within the next 3 months. Please note an NMC PRN PIN is not a full NMC PIN and would not fulfil the essential criteria for this role.

  • Registered on Part 1 of the NMC Adult Nurse or Childrens nurse or midwife
  • Have completed specific training in the care of babies, children and young people
  • Have completed post reg training in Cared for Children / safeguarding children, including law policy and practice at post graduate level.
  • Working towards Masters qualification in Safeguarding or related subject.
  • Substantial safeguarding children's experience at Band 6 or above.
  • Substantial experience of caring for babies, children and young people
  • Experience in participating and undertaking audits.
  • Expertise in child health development in maltreatment, including the impact of ACES, trauma informed practice and the importance of the voice of children.
  • Experience of dealing with highliy continuous and emotive information and advising on the management of sensitive cases.
  • Expert knowledge of legislation and policy relating to CFC
  • Expert knowledge and understanding of the key issues facing children in care and the impact on children families and carers.
  • Understanding the needs of cultural diverse community and hard to reach groups.
  • Managing groups / stakeholders and conflict.
  • Excellent leaderships skills
  • High level critical thinking skills
  • Ability to work independently and as a team player.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to negotiate at local level.
