This is a very special role for a treasure chest of a garden which spans many designers and horticultural styles.

The garden itself holds a kitchen garden boasting a huge collection which includes orchards/wildflowers, no dig organic vegetable beds, asparagus, espalier pears and cherries, rhubarb and not to forget HUGE banana plants Herbaceous, annual and shrub borders flanked by nearly 300 metres of yew hedging all link through the garden providing colour throughout the seasons.

Lakeside walks through woodlands leading to a magical Menagerie Garden with Magnolias, Acer, philadelphus, Hosta's, Bergenia to name but a few.

We have much larger ambitions for the gardens, the team are currently drawing up plans to develop the current rose garden back to its original intentions for growing medicinal plants, linking the relationship of the mansion and gardens more closely.

This project will grow on further across the gardens as the story expands. There could not be a better time to jump on board as the journey begins.

What it's like to work here:Nostell is part of the West Yorkshire Portfolio along with Marsden, East Riddlesden Hall and Hardcastle Crags.

Managed by the Senior Gardener you will also work closely with the property Ranger team at Nostell.


Working closely with, and reporting directly to the Senior Gardener, you will play an important part in the daily management of a team of volunteers, you will lead by example, ensuring that the garden is presented to the highest horticultural standards.

An eye for detail is essential in all aspects of your work and you'll take your commitment to safe working practices within the department seriously.

At times you'll take responsibility for the delivery of small projects including sourcing of materials and management of budgets.


You'll also work closely with the Visitor Experience team to help and participate in a range of garden activities and events.

This role requires working weekends and bank holidays on a rota basis.

What you'll be doing:
As a hands-on Gardener, you'll assist in making sure that the gardens are maintained to a high standard. You'll be passionate and enthused and knowledgeable about the varied plants within the garden.

This role will include a range of practical horticultural tasks to develop, enhance and conserve the garden and contribute to the delivery of projects.

You'll be helping with hard and soft landscaping and general maintenance of the garden, such as mulching, pruning, leaf clearing and weeding.

You'll support with the planting and maintenance of trees, shrubs, herbaceous plants. You'll be helping to cut the hedges and mow our fine lawns.

You'll also take ownership of specific areas of the garden ensuring the highest standards are maintained and healthy plants are available for our visitors to enjoy.

You'll also support garden volunteers and help them to make the most of their time here.

You'll be expected to interact with the public on a daily basis, answering the many questions, or help out with gardening workshops, tours and helping set up events when needed.

Who we're looking forTo be successful in this role we'd love you to be able to demonstrate the below:

  • Trained as a professional gardener/horticulturalist with a good level of practical experience
  • RHS Level 2 or equivalent
  • Have proven practical gardening/horticulture experience, as well as a strong knowledge of plants
  • Confidence to participate in garden activities and events
  • Competence with machinery/equipment use and maintenance; including tractors, chainsaws, and pedestrian mowers with accreditation as required for Health and Safety compliance.
