We have some exciting opportunities available at Barking and Dagenham College.

We are looking for
ALS Tutor - Engineering, for a 25 hours per week, fixed term contract to 28th June 2024.

You will join us on a part-time, fixed-term basis and in return, we will offer a competitive salary of £24,872 - £43,440 pa inc LW (to be pro rata'd to 0.694 FTE)

The
ALS Tutor - Engineering role:

To work proactively with students, aiming to improve achievement by identifying, implementing and supporting students with various academic needs support needs.

To liaise with academic staff to monitor performance of those who are at risk of achieving and also those who require additional support.

To review the learning and progress of students with EHCP identified as having learning difficulties.


Along with other members of the team, the post holder will carry out progress reviews and liaise with academic staff in ensuring these are triangulated.

The post holder will also contribute to projects and activities developing the service to meet the needs of students and to support staff in ensuring needs are fully anticipated within the curriculum, including the creation of resources and guidance.

Through the provision of these services, the post holder contributes to a positive student experience.


Key Responsibilities of our ALS Tutor - Engineering:

  • Teach and assess on one or more of the courses delivered, or serviced, by the curriculum area and contribute to the development of existing and new, innovative provision, including the implementation of motivational, flexible and blended learning and cost effective teaching and learning styles
  • Teaching and supported students during 121 or small group sessions, mainly focused on but not limited to Physics, Maths and other relevant elements for those on Engineering and other industry programs.
  • Disseminating information to staff regarding best practice for teaching students with EHCPs, which aim to enhance engagement and academic progress
  • Work with the ALS team to promote the needs and learning of students who have been identified as having additional educational needs
  • Keeping up to date records and assessment of the progress and barriers of the students allocated to your teaching timetable

Our ideal ALS Tutor - Engineering should have the following qualifications, skills and experience:

  • Relevant degree to support Engineering students with strong elements of Maths and Physics.
  • Possess a L5 teaching qualification or be prepared to undertake a further education teaching qualification
  • Knowledge and experience of teaching and supporting students with educational concept of Physics and Maths within a group or on individual basis.
  • Experience of teaching students within engineering programs
  • Familiarity with key approaches to student learning development and how these can be adapted for students with EHCPs
