The Speech and Language Therapy service is provided to adult patients with disorders of communication, dysphagia and associated problems within community and hospital settings.

You will work within uni/multi-disciplinary teams in assessing and treating adult acquired communication disorders and dysphagia.

You will contribute to the prevention of unnecessary hospital admissions, more timely discharges and the improvement of the health and wellbeing of the population served.


You will need to have the following skills or experience:

  • Be a registered Speech and Language Therapist
  • Pursue post graduate dysphagia training
  • A willingness to undertake postregistration training relevant to the post
You will received enhanced support to complete the RCSLT Newly Qualified Practitioner Competencies if not already completed.

Working in a multi-disciplinary team and in partnership with Specialist Speech and Language Therapists, you will

  • Provide assessment for service users and formulate, develop, implement and evaluate programmes of treatment /care/support for individuals, families and carers.

The care/support plans may include the following:

  • Promoting independence/self-management and maintaining safety
  • Increased functional ability
  • Improvement in health and wellbeing including mental health
  • Interventions in disease/condition management
  • Prevention and reduction of health inequalities
  • Admission avoidance
  • Early supported discharge
  • Case management/treatment/care plans
  • Palliative and end of life care
  • Be responsible for an agreed case load
  • Use professional knowledge and judgement to take into account the range of care/support packages and treatment options available and consider each service user's personal circumstances and preferences in order to implement and adjust programmes of care and intervention.
