The Early Years Educatorapprenticeship consists of an 24 month opportunity to learn and to provide support to the Bright Start team.

We are responsible for supporting parents to ensure their children have the best start in life.

Your duties will include planning and creating activities for children, observing children at our sessions and ensuring children are safe.

You will gain an understanding of the work of the team and will work in a supported learning environment whilst working towards a nationally recognised Level 3 Early Years Educator apprenticeship.


  • Be an Islington resident or
  • Islington care leaver or
  • Islington school leaver in the last 12 months
As part of the recruitment process you will need to fulfil the following course entry requirements:

  • Pass the course entry tests for example in Maths and English

The Job -Working as a Early Years Educator Apprentice for the Council you will:

  • Work with your team and parents to develop, play and learning activities
  • Take responsibility for ensuring children are safe (training will be provided)
  • Participate in play activities such as 'stay and play' sessions
  • Support to plan and evaluate play activities
  • Update session plans, observation notes on the activities
  • Work with the wider team including health colleagues to support child development

Training and Development -As part of your role you will:

  • Complete a Level 3 Early Years Educator apprenticeshipqualification
  • Study Maths and English if you have not already achieved a GCSE or Level 2 equivalent
  • Participate in the Councils apprenticeship network and various development activities
  • Have access to a mentor.

After you have successfully completed your apprenticeship, you will have gained valuable workplace experience and attained a nationally recognised qualification.

This will improve your chances of finding work within the Council, with another employer or help you move on to a higher-level apprenticeship.


  • Undertake a development programme leading to a Level 3 Early Years Educator apprenticeship qualification.
  • Use the dedicated time given to complete studies and coursework.
  • Actively participate in your own development. This includes carrying out duties of your role and completing coursework within agreed deadlines.
  • With supervision to develop skills and experience in:
  • Planning and supervising activities
- working with your team and parents, provide a friendly, safe and stimulating play and learning environment


  • Safeguarding
- undertake necessary training and reporting issues where required


  • Child Development
- to plan, deliver and evaluate play and creative activities for Stay & Play sessions at our Bright Start venues.


  • Child Behaviour
- work with staff and parents to maintain appropriate positive behaviour with children.


  • Assessments and Record Keeping
  • Carrying out observation assessments, risk assessments and updating records to plan activities for next steps
  • Meeting children's needs
- work with your team to plan activities which meet children's physical, social, emotional and intellectual development

  • Attend staff meetings and INSET days and assist with planning meetings.
  • Undertake other duties compatible with your learning and development, including occasional Saturday working
  • Constructively take part in meetings, supervision, seminars, and other events designed to improve communication.
