Plymouth Electron Microscopy Centre wishes to appoint a Technical Specialist to contribute to commercial, teaching and research activities within the facility, focussed on materials science and the operation of the focused ion beam scanning electron microscope (FIB-SEM).

This represents an exciting opportunity to join a cutting-edge facility at a time of investment and expansion.


Plymouth Electron Microscopy centre (PEMC) is a core facility within the University of Plymouth that engages and assists teaching and research across the university as well as commercially working with businesses across the country.


You will join an interdisciplinary team of technical staff within which, this role will focus primarily on aiding the School of Engineering, Chemistry and Maths as well as maintaining and building our commercial business interctions.

As such, you will be expected to nurture a constructive relationship with the school with the aim of assisting and collaborating with academics and students alike.

In addition to research and teaching commitments, the role will also involve interacting with other stakeholders within the university across a range of projects as well as direct interaction with commercial clients.

As such, travel to external locations for outreach and commercial purposes will be required.


You will be jointly responsible for the day-to-day running and maintenance of the range of instruments and analytical systems in use within the centre but your primary focus will be on our Zeiss crossbeam 550 FIB-SEM.

The centre currently utilises a total of nine instruments and in the next 12 months the centre will begin to move into a new bespoke and centralised facility.


As part of our engagement with students, academics, technicians, clients and the general public, PEMC engages with several outreach events, both virtual and in person as well as maintaining a social media output, designed to raise the profile of the centre.

Any new member of the PEMC team would be expected to contribute towards these outputs as well as drive new initiatives forward.


You will be an enthusiastic team player, and your enthusiasm for your area of expertise will extend to providing an excellent level of support to users of PEMC.

You will have a first degree in a related scientific or engineering discipline, alongside a PhD or equivalent qualification, or equivalent technical experience working within the laboratory setting.

Relevant experience using EM based technologies is essential to this role, in particular experience of FIB-SEM opration. EDS, and/or EBSD knowledge or experience would also be desirable.

There is an essential requirement within this role that you will be required to travel to and work at different University sites and/or other business locations that may not be easily accessible by public transport.

This is a full-time, permanent position, working 37 hours a week.
