    Principal Board Design Engineer

    The company is a leading CPU development manufacturer in the UK and are looking to add a Principal Board Design Engineer to their team in Cambridge.

    The team is currently involved in designing hardware platforms with custom SoC and FPGAs at the heart. These platforms serve as powerful tools for software development and validation, used by both internal developers and external collaborators. This is a permanent role based on-site in Cambridge, currently visa sponsorship is not available for the role.

    Responsibilities for the role:

    • Specification, development, and commissioning of new hardware platforms.
    • Lead PCB development, including schematics and commissioning.
    • Manage external contractors and provide manufacturing support.
    • Grow and coordinate the team to ensure on-schedule delivery.
    • Work closely with the program team.
    • Plan and schedule tasks to meet project deadlines.

    Requirements for this role:

    • Proven ability to lead and manage cross-functional teams, fostering a collaborative and high-performing environment.
    • Experience working effectively with outsourcing companies, ensuring seamless collaboration across geographical and cultural boundaries.
    • Deep knowledge of embedded system board design, including expertise in complex LSI devices like FPGAs, high-speed I/O interfaces (PCIe, DDR), and PCB stack-ups and topologies.

    These will make your profile stand out:

    • Proficient in industry-standard EDA tools for schematic capture (e.g., Cadence CIS, Mentor PADs Layout), PCB layout (e.g., Allegro PCB Designer), and signal integrity analysis (e.g., Hyperlynx).
    • Combine hardware expertise with embedded software knowledge to effectively test and debug designs. Utilize a creative and structured approach to problem-solving.
    • Possess RTL design skills in Verilog or VHDL for hardware description language (HDL) implementation.
    • Leverage scripting and automation skills using shell programming/scripting languages (e.g., Tcl, Perl, Python) in a UNIX environment to streamline workflows.
    • Demonstrate a well-rounded programming skillset encompassing assembly language (ideally Arm assembler), higher-level languages (e.g., C), and object-oriented programming (e.g., C++).
