Summary of roles


At the Department for Education, we are offering you the chance to play a key role in the development of our financial frameworks for academies and colleges.

If you join us, you will play a pivotal role in protecting the £65 billion of funding we provide to academies, colleges and other training providers.

We are recruiting high calibre individuals to join our Financial Frameworks Team.

The team is at the forefront of establishing financial management and governance, accounting, reporting and assurance frameworks for academy trusts, colleges and other training providers in receipt of funding from the Department.

It is therefore a key team within the Department, playing a fundamental role in preventing the misuse of public funds.

You will help develop the frameworks, engaging with internal and external stakeholders, supporting and reporting to Frameworks Managers.

We are seeking to recruit staff who have:

  • strong interest in financial accounting, governance and financial management, with a keen eye for detail
- a good level of professional and technical skill, achieved in an assurance, technical or governance environment, with knowledge of auditing, financial reporting and accounting standards
- knowledge and understanding of best practice financial management and governance arrangements, preferably within public or education bodies
- a professional accountancy or audit qualification or studying for one (desirable)

The DfE is responsible for children's services and education, including early years, schools, higher and further education policy, apprenticeships and wider skills in England.

Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA)
The ESFA is an executive agency, sponsored by the Department for Education, which is accountable for funding education and training for children, young people and adults


The Agency:
- provides £65 billion of funding for the education and training sector, ensuring timely and accurate allocations and payment of education and skills funding to academy trusts, local authorities, colleges and training providers
- provides assurance that public funds are properly spent, achieves value for money for the taxpayer and delivers the policies and priorities set by the Secretary of State
- provides, where necessary, financial support for providers.


About the team
These roles are in the Financial Frameworks Team within ESFA's Finance & Provider Market Oversight Directorate (FPMO).

Our mission is to implement a robust, yet proportionate, system of accountability for education and skills providers, reducing the level of risk within a sector that receives annual ESFA funding of over £65 billion.

FPMO comprises approximately 215 staff based at DFE sites across the country.


The Financial Frameworks Team is a team of 9 staff comprising the Head of Financial Frameworks, 4 managers and 4 senior advisors.

The Team is at the forefront of establishing financial management and governance, reporting, accounting and assurance frameworks for academy trusts, colleges and other training providers in receipt of ESFA funds.
