  • As a Team Member in our local Field Teams, you will be maintaining our river and flood defence assets and responding to flood and pollution incidents. You will be working as part of a diverse team and will help to carry out small construction projects and routine maintenance, efficiently, safely and to a high standard. You need to be able to communicate professionally with our partners and members of the public.
This hands-on and physical role involves working as part of a team, outside in all weathers.

You will be required to carry out some machine work, so experience of driving dumpers and excavators would be advantageous but not essential as all training will be given.

You will also be involved in a wide range of activities, from grass cutting using strimmers, robotic and ride on mowing equipment to clearing debris/blockages along with tree work using chainsaws and chippers.

You will participate in our 24-hour call-out rosters, responding with your team to operate our assets including pumps, flood barriers and penstocks.

This is currently for one week, every five/six week. You will play an active role in protecting homes and businesses from flood risk.

Please note that it is a mandatory requirement for all new starters in field teams to enrol on the Water Environment Worker (WEW) Apprenticeship.

This apprenticeship helps provide the knowledge, skills and behaviours you will need to succeed in your role. The apprenticeship also requires you to have a level 4 (grade C) GCSE or equivalent in English and Maths.

If you do not already hold this level of qualification you will be supported to complete functional skills level 2 literacy and numeracy as part of your apprenticeship.


  • The team
  • The Operations Field team are based at Gainsborough We deliver a maintenance program on rivers and watercourse across the area, we respond to flooding and environmental incidents both day and night. We provide advice and support to our colleagues and professional partners.
We also work across the country when called upon to assist other areas in incident response and environmental incidents.

  • Experience/skills required
  • Someone with Field team experience with good communication skills.
Ideally having the proven ability and be able to demonstrate the following:

Experience in a range of mobile plant and equipment including dumpers and 360 excavators would be desirable but not essential as all training will be given.


  • Qualifications and experience in chainsaw operations
  • Plan and organise the routine for the day with mínimal supervision.
  • Deputise for the Lead Team Member (Foreman) in times of absence.
  • Communicate at a variety of levels, both internally & externally
  • Excellent customer service skills both written and verbal.
  • Selfmotivation, with the ability to work well in a team.
  • Personal skills requirement: taking initiative, good time management, flexibility, problem solving and decision making.
  • Basic understanding of IT technology including smart phones and tablets
