    The Role

    The School of History, Classics & Archaeology is excited to advertise this role as part of a strategic investment in Classics & Ancient History at Newcastle University. We are searching for cutting-edge researchers and educators working in any sub-field of Ancient History, and we are especially keen to develop further our strengths in the study of global antiquity, diversify our teaching and research, and sustain our commitment to interdisciplinarity.

    You will contribute to the research profile of the Classics and Ancient History Section in the School of History, Classics and Archaeology (HCA) by developing an ambitious research programme, including (for example) publishing high-quality outputs in internationally recognised venues, demonstrating research impact, and securing external research funding. You will be an innovative educator, contributing to the development and delivery of programmes in HCA, ensuring an outstanding teaching experience for our students.

    Key Accountabilities

    Teaching & Learning

    • To provide high-quality teaching and learning and student support

    • Mentor and support students throughout their studies in the role of personal tutor

    • Set and mark assessment of modules in accordance with University standards and utilise on-line and digitised curricula and education frameworks

    • Contribute to curriculum development

    • Ensure all our students benefit from studying in a research-intensive academic environment

    • Provide education for life, that engages, challenges and supports our students to discover and fulfil their potential both while they are studying with us and once they have graduated

    Research

    • Conduct research of international significance in terms of its originality, significance and rigour in the subject area of Classics and Ancient History

    • Contribute to the research profile of HCA by publishing high-quality outputs

    • Pursue external funding

    • Ability or potential to demonstrate impact by developing research-based solutions to real-world problems and engage with external stakeholders to develop the impact of your work

    • Supervise PGR students

    Other

    • Contribute to the HCA Vision, Mission and Strategy

    • Operate as an active citizen in the HCA community

    • To have a commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion and ethics, responsibility and sustainability

    • To support the School's global activities and development

    • Undertake a range of administrative tasks to support your area of teaching, and/or research, and/or engagement

    • Take responsibility for a defined management or administrative role such as Module Leader, Year Tutor, Degree Programme Director, Research Director, Outreach Co-ordinator

    • Contribute to the School's international, programme and professional body accreditations

    • Contribute to the wider work of the School, Faculty and University through input to project teams, working groups, and committees

    The level of appointment will be determined by your ability to meet the requirements of the person specification as outlined below.

    Knowledge, Skills & Experience
    Lecturer Grade F


    • Research and teaching expertise in any aspect of Ancient History

    • Ability to teach options and supervise dissertation projects across the range of the history and culture of the ancient world, including Greek and Roman, and according to the strategic needs on our programmes

    • Ability to contribute to the delivery and development of the whole range of the UG and PG programmes offered by the Classics and Ancient History Section

    • Ability or potential to provide an outstanding educational experience, rooted in strong disciplinary knowledge that engages, challenges, and inspires our students

    • Ability to deliver research-led teaching, making effective use of technology to enhance learning

    • A commitment to fostering and amplifying diverse and marginalised voices within Ancient History through innovative and inclusive pedagogy

    • Evidence or potential for internationalising the curricula

    • Ability to develop research funding applications and secure external funding

    • Experience of or capability to publish internationally significant and world-leading research

    • Ability or potential to engage with external stakeholders, generating real-world impact from research

    • Evidence of developing an international research profile

    • Evidence of ability to contribute to the research environment and culture of the Classics and Ancient History Section

    • Ability to supervise PGR students

    • Ability to supervise undergraduate and taught postgraduate students' research projects

    • Commitment to interdisciplinary work

    • Excellent written and oral communication skills

    • Excellent organisational, time management and presentation skills

    • Demonstration of successful team working

    • Personal resilience in a context of change and fast-paced environment

    • Commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion, and to ethics, responsibility and sustainability

    Desirable

    • Experience of working in, or with, business, the third sector and policy

    Qualifications

    Lecturer Grade F

    • A good Honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject

    • PhD (or equivalent) at or near completion (strictly within three months of submission at time of application) in a relevant subject

    Desirable

    • A relevant Professional Body Membership as appropriate to the subject area


    • HE teaching qualification (or equivalent experience)
