Due to retirement, a role has become available to manage the Newborn hearing screeners within a well-established Newborn Hearing Screening team, working 22.5 hours per week.


The post holder will be responsible for the line management of the Newborn Hearing Screening team, this includes recruitment, staff appraisals, dealing with disciplinary matters, counselling, and supporting staff as appropriate, sickness and absence monitoring, coordinating annual leave ensuring there is appropriate cover, monitoring mandatory/specific training compliance and complaints.

The post holder will be responsible for monitoring the National Screening Programme Standards and Key performance Indicators, producing reports for the Antenatal & Newborn Screening Coordinator and Programme board

The post holder will be expected the fulfil the main duties as outlined by the Job description


These are:

  • To undertake the day to day running of the hearing screening programme, promoting the principles of Family Friendly Hearing Service for children.
  • Monitor the screening cohort to ensure all eligible babies are offered screening within the national recommended time frame
  • Access daily workload frequently using Smart 4 Hearing (S4H) national programme, running searches to ensure all screening cohort regularly updated. Prioritise and allocate staff to provide adequate staff/patient ratio
  • Follow up babies who have missed their screening. Identifying why, arranging further appointments if required
  • Ensure screening data input within time frame guidance, that it is correct, and outcomes set.


There has never been a more exciting time to join West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust Major redevelopment works are due for completion by 2025 or soon after.

These will be most dramatic at Watford General Hospital where up to 90% of buildings will be new.

Other responsibilities of the job will be:

  • Collaborate with the community service to provide suitable rooms for newborn hearing screening within the three outreach areas within the Trusts catchment area. Ensuring equity of access and family friendly to the screening population.
  • To lead the clinical team carrying out the screening of all babies within the postnatal wards, neonatal unit, and community clinics.
  • To lead the recruitment, selection, and development of staff within the hearing screening team
  • To manage staffing flow, coordinating off duty rota's, annual leave, sickness etc. to ensure adequate staffing to meet the needs of the service
  • To establish, motivate and develop the team, identifying individual training needs and ensuring that written appraisal and competencies are completed within the designated time frames and provide performance feedback
  • To monitor staff training compliancy both local and national
