Description

Stowcare Ltd is a residential Care Home for the elderly looking after residents. They are currently looking for a Health Care Assistant apprentice to learn and work within their team.

Main Responsibilities


Care of the residents:


  • To deliver person centered care looking at the individual requirements of the residents, not the tasks to be undertaken.
  • Assisting residents with all personal care, including the following.
  • Encouraging residents' independence at all times whilst delivering the necessary care during washing, dressing, bathing, assisting with the toilet, during episodes of incontinence, according to the individual care plans and manual handling risk assessments.
  • Encouraging good habits in cleanliness and hygiene as appropriate.
  • Assisting the activities coordinator in providing stimulation and enjoyment of the day
  • Recording all interactions with the residents, electronically, on the daily record categories in a professional, non judgmental way using appropriate language without prejudice

Meals:


  • Carrying meals to residents in their rooms on trays, or serving meals in the dining room as appropriate
  • Giving the residents as much assistance as they need to eat their meals, such as cutting up food
  • Preparing and serving light meals at teatime Preparing and serving drinks as required
  • Laying the tables in the dining room
  • Encouraging residents to maintain a healthy diet and drink plenty of fluid
  • Checking that residents on special diets are given the correct food
  • Completing any food, fluid or bowel charts as appropriate to ensure residents health and wellbeing is maintained.

Exercise/Social:


  • Encouraging residents to be mobile and to exercise whenever possible
  • Listening and talking to residents in order to build up a personal rapport with them
  • Encouraging residents to join in social activities and outings as appropriate

Care of the Home:


  • Caring for residents' clothing, including making minor repairs, laundering and putting clothes away
  • Following procedures for dealing with soiled linen and incontinence pads
  • Helping to maintain standards of cleanliness and tidiness in the Home, including mopping up spillages when they occur and sweeping up dropped food
  • Making beds daily and changing bed linen and towels and flannels when necessary.
  • Helping to ensure that the Home is clean and tidy at all times

Visitors/Relatives:


  • Welcoming visitors and relatives of Residents to the Home at all times
  • Preparing drinks for relatives and visitors
  • Respecting a resident's refusal to see a visitor if it occurs and communicating this tactfully to the visitor nvolving relatives in the care of the residents according with the residents' wishes
  • Displaying a professional attitude when dealing with relatives and visitors. This includes refusing any gifts offered by relatives, tactfully.
  • Goods should only be purchased on behalf of residents with the agreement of a Manager

Communication/Record-keeping:


  • Maintaining confidentiality, both at work and when off duty
  • Reporting any physical or mental changes in a resident's condition on the electronic system under the varying categories, and informing the senior member of staff on duty verbally. Even minor observations must be reported
  • Communicating residents' needs to other serviceproviders (e.g. chiropodist, hairdresser) when necessary
  • Working as affective team member by communicating with colleagues and the management team about any area of concern
  • Recording menu choices of the residents at mealtimes, when necessary
  • Completing all paper records according to the care plan needs of each resident
Entry requirements

Qualifications needed to complete a Level 2 i.e English and Maths.

Training to be provided

  • The learner will be studying the Adult Care Worker Level 2 Apprenticeship Standard qualification.
  • Day release to West Suffolk College.
  • Functional skills will be studied if equivalent qualifications are not held.
Things to consider

You will be working on your feet for long periods of time. Pay at an hourly rate can go up to £9.88 depends on time of shift.
