The role of Team Leader is one of the most varied and important roles in our organisation.

The National Permitting Service (NPS) are seeking Team Leaders to join our department at an exciting time, playing a leading role by supporting our people to help create a cleaner, safer and healthier environment.


  • As a leader, you will work with your team members to be the best they can be through managing their performance, looking after their health, safety and wellbeing and supporting their development.
  • NPS regulate activities that impact the environment and your role will be crucial to this work. You will work with your team to balance priorities, make risk based decisions and manage a service with a number of different work areas/types.
  • Your teams will have direct contact with applicants for environmental permits and licenses. Your ability to lead a strong customer service ethos in your team will be crucial.
  • You will develop and maintain good working relationships other teams as working closely with Area teams, NPS leadership team and regime leads is important.
  • You will support team members through changes in NPS as we work to improve.
  • Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents, or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.

  • The team
  • The National Permitting Service delivers the Environment Agency's permitting and regulatory responsibilities, enabling businesses to operate whilst protecting and improving the environment.
  • NPS consists of 450 staff delivering a broad range of permits and licenses. You will be one of multiple supportive Team Leader colleagues working under the same manager. Your team will include at least one senior officer who supports technical development. Teams work flexibly at home or the office and meet up regularly.
Experience/skills required

  • The ability to direct, motivate and lead a team to deliver results
  • Well organised with the ability to adapt to changing demands, handling multiple priorities and delivering within tight timescales
  • Strong customer focus with influencing skills that will ensure good outcomes for the permitting service.
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to lead change well within your team
  • Good judgement, problem solving and decision making skills
  • A broad knowledge of Environment Agency duties and responsibilities
  • The ability to work collaboratively with people throughout the organisation
  • Passionate about the environment
  • Champion Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity (EDI) through your positive and flexible leadership style
  • Previous experience of leading a team, knowledge of the environmental permitting process and the work of NPS is desirable, but not essential. You will develop your knowledge and skills as you are inducted to the roles. Your learning will be done through a mixture of mentoring, attending courses and selflearning.
