    Birmingham City University is a large and diverse place to study right in the heart of the vibrant city. We currently have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Student Systems Developer to join our dynamic team within the newly formed Directorate of Student and Academic Services. The Directorate is responsible for ensuring that students have an excellent experience and provides services across the student and academic lifecycle from enrolment to graduation, covering everything from wellbeing services to ensuring new courses are set up correctly. This role will suit an experienced Student Systems Developer who can contribute to the development and enhancement of core student systems in the configuration/build stage.

    About the Role:

    Working within Delivery Services you will report to the Student Systems Development and Analysis Manager. You will be able to build positive cross departmental working relationships and deliver user friendly systems developments to a defined schedule of activity whilst being agile and responding to business demands. The post holder will be have a comprehensive working knowledge of SITS, e:Vision as the primary student records system.

    The post holder will capture user requirements, translating these into formal specifications and then completing the systems development. The post holder will write coherent code, deciding on the best way to deliver the systems solution. This will involve extensive stakeholder engagement, testing and creation of clear user documentation.

    Main Responsibilities:

    In line with the academic calendar and business strategy the Student Systems Developer will:

  • Take an active role in the development, configuration, and deployment of core student systems.
  • Work collaboratively and proactively with key stakeholders such as IT, academics, Finance, Admissions and Faculty Student Centres.
  • Use a comprehensive working knowledge to develop and maintain SITS, e:Vision (including the e:Vision front end), driven by business requests which have been gathered and documented by Students Systems and Records Analysts.
  • Provide technical documentation including design and solution documents.
  • Undertake ad hoc and cyclical tasks that cannot be carried out by the user or super user in e:Vision, SITS:Vision, for example bulk update processing using system or specialist development tools.
  • Deliver third line support for issue management to resolve intermediate and more complex issues within core student systems as escalated by colleagues. Act as lead in identifying Problems, Root Cause, workarounds, and permanent resolution of issues relating to the system.
  • Role Requirements:

  • Educated to a degree level or equivalent experience.
  • Experience in the development and configuration of a Student Records System.
  • Experience of developing solutions primarily based on core student systems to support the university business process and maximise staff and student experience in engaging with the SRS.
  • Understanding of SRL syntax, Vistas, and tasks.
  • Working knowledge of additional web development languages, particularly although not exclusively HTML, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, and SQL.
  • Experience of using Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services.
  • Understanding of Integration activities and of integrating with other systems in an enterprise environment using an Enterprise Service Bus (ESB).
