Job Summary

  • Hourly pay rate: Competitive

  • Contract: Bank


Under the direction of the manager, serve as a medical interpreter for patients and staff and supports the operations of the department, in consecutive, simultaneous, and sight translation modes.

Relays medical information between speakers of two different languages in compliance with all office and hospital policies and procedures, particularly relating to patient confidentiality and informed consent.


We have shifts available on the following patterns:
Monday to Friday: 08:00-20:00

Saturday and Sunday: 09:00 -17:00

What will your duties include?

  • Help facilitate successful delivery of services to linguistically diverse consumers.
  • Explain hospital resources, protocols, and limitations to clinicians and patients and make appropriate referrals
  • Serve as a cultural and linguistic resource to both patients and providers to contribute to successful outcomes.
  • Adhere to hospital policies on customer relations and hospitality.
  • Understand the hospital's system of service delivery.
  • Provide written translations as required in patient encounters such as filling out forms; medical instructions and medication schedules
  • Support the office operations by using systems effectively, interacting with patients about appointments, taking requests, documenting encounters on the interpreter tracking system and other tasks as required.
  • Utilise Microsoft Office software and other hospital systems.
  • Work with special projects as assigned.

Education:


  • Bachelor's degree in languages/interpretation/translation or Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (DPSI) (Preferable)
  • Membership of National Register for Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI) (Preferable)

Competencies (Complexity of Work):

  • Fluency in English and another required interpreting language (Mandarin, Russian, Greek, Arabic, Japanese) etc.
  • High level of customer service and a positive approach
  • Familiarity and ability to work with diverse cultural/socioeconomic backgrounds
  • General knowledge of cultural backgrounds of patients to be served

Work Experience:

  • Substantial uptodate professional interpreting experience with a minimum of 3 years' experience (Essential)
  • Experience of written translation between both English and the interpreting language (Preferable)
  • Professional Medical Interpreting experience (Highly Desirable)
  • Relevant experience in healthcare setting as a medical interpreter with strong knowledge of medical conditions and terminology preferred (Essential)
