    We are delighted to be able to offer the opportunity for a highly motivated and ambitious Consultant Surgeon with a special interest in Head and Neck Cancer, as well as Skin Cancer to join our team.

    This is a new post created to meet the increasing demands of the Head & Neck cancer service.

    We are looking for a Consultant Surgeon with drive and vision to enhance our quality patient centred service. The post is based at Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth, with the possibility of providing a visiting role to St Mary's Hospital on the Isle of Wight.

    Main duties of the job

    We aim to recruit an outstanding and forward-thinking Maxillofacial Head & Neck Surgeon, who will undertake inpatient surgery as a part of the Head & Neck MDT, and a spectrum of maxillofacial care, and contribute to the 1:7 Maxillofacial general on-call rota. The postholder will also provide outpatient clinics and surgical sessions under local anaesthetic in support of the wide range of maxillofacial care provided within the department. There is also the requirement to give on-site support and input as needed in relation to other related PHU specialties, and provide training and support for our junior staff.

    Full GMC registration is required (GDC optional), with a licence to practice.

    Job responsibilities

    The department is based within theHead and Neck Clinical Services Centre, which comprises the Departments of: ENTand Audio-Vestibular Medicine, Audiology, Maxillo-Facial Surgery, Ophthalmologyand Dermatology. The MFU has a team of specialists providing orthodontics, oralsurgery and restorative dentistry as part of dental and surgical MDT care. Wehave a fully equipped MFU laboratory with highly skilled specialist techniciansproviding the support for rehabilitation post-surgery and complex care. Clinicalsupport staff including nursing, technical and administration staff numbers arein place to support this post.

    Key Responsibilities:

    The appointee will join theMaxillofacial Team as a Consultant Surgeon and will be expected to participatein all facets of department activity with particular focus on the management ofHead and neck cancer patients and reconstruction.

    The post will be based at QueenAlexandra Hospital, Maxillofacial Department with a possible visiting role toSt, Marys Hospital in the Isle of Wight (clinics and day case surgery only). Full participation in teaching, audit andresearch will be expected. The Trustruns a mentorship scheme which is accessible to all new consultants.

  • Able to demonstrate appropriate level of clinical knowledge
  • Knowledge and use of evidence-based practice

  • Qualifications

  • Full GMC registration with a license to practice
  • FRCS OMFS
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery or within 6 months of obtaining CCST (or equivalent) in OMFS
  • Registerable dental degree
  • Desirable

  • International/National Head and Neck Fellowship
  • Experience

    Essential

  • Broad clinical training in the speciality of OFMS
  • Experience of free tissue transfer in the head and neck for Oral and Skin reconstruction
  • Clinical Skills

    Essential

  • Demonstrable skills and experience of Maxillofacial Surgery
  • Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy experience would be desirable
  • Understanding of clinical risk management
