    We are seeking a Head of Engineering & Platform Strategy to play a pivotal role in spearheading the creation and expansion of a cutting-edge engineering and software development practice within Penguin Random House UK.

    In this newly created role, you will report into the Director of Enterprise Strategy & Architecture and Workplace Solutions.

    In this role, your responsibilities will include:

    • Leading the development and execution of a comprehensive engineering and software development strategy aligned with our company's broader goals and digital transformation initiatives.
    • Fostering a collaborative and innovative work environment by working alongside our Software Engineers, Architects and Platform Specialists.
    • Driving the design and implementation of Technology platforms supporting content delivery and distribution, from physical books to eBooks and audiobooks.
    • Identifying emerging technologies and trends in the publishing industry to ensure our company remains at the forefront of innovation and meets the evolving needs of our readers and authors.
    • Overseeing the development of scalable and high-performance systems, ensuring their reliable operation alongside our existing infrastructure.
    • Collaborating closely with cross-functional teams, including Editorial, Marketing and Operations, to align Technology solutions with business objectives.
    • Driving innovation, addressing technical debt, advancing system architecture and improving processes while meeting product and business goals, in collaboration with cross-functional teams.
    • Establishing a vision and roadmap for the growth and development of platforms within our Technology infrastructure in partnership with the wider team.
    • Providing expert technical advice and supporting on engineering matters, engaging in the full software development life cycle from planning and design to testing and deployment.
    • Driving engineering best practices, quality assurance and adherence to coding standards, ensuring the reliability, scalability, and security of our platforms, and conduct code reviews to maintain high code quality and promote knowledge sharing.

    What you'll bring:

    • A proven track record in senior technical leadership roles such as Head of Engineering or Engineering Manager, demonstrating the ability to drive and inspire engineering teams to achieve exceptional results.
    • Demonstrated expertise in developing effective engineering practices within complex organisations, ensuring the alignment of technical strategies with business objectives.
    • A strong technical background and proficiency in full stack software development, system architecture, and engineering best practices, enabling the delivery of high-quality, innovative solutions.
    • Extensive experience with scalable, high-traffic, and data-intensive platforms, cloud-based architectures (Azure and AWS) and microservices, ensuring the robustness and adaptability of engineering solutions.
    • Proficiency in multiple programming languages and data engineering concepts, providing a comprehensive understanding of diverse technical frameworks and methodologies.
    • In-depth understanding of software architecture and design patterns, with the ability to apply them effectively in real-world scenarios, coupled with strong problem-solving abilities and a strategic mindset.

    For this role, there are regular meetings and activities that you will need to attend in person mainly at our offices in London. Outside of these moments, you can choose to work remotely.

    The exact balance of office to remote working can be discussed with your future manager during the recruitment process. What we can say now is that you won't need to go into the office five days a week, unless of course you want to.
