As part of the Leadership Team for the Directorate, the post holder will lead the scoping, planning and co-ordination of the Digital Strategy and related teams across NHS Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin (NHS STW) Integrated Care System (ICS) and Integrated Care Board (ICB).


Digital Innovation and Transformation is a pivotal service for NHS STW ICS and ICB to drive forward the Digital Strategy across the health and care system.

A successful Head of Digital Innovation & Transformation will provide a strategic edge in the increasingly integrated landscape of the NHS.


The Head of Digital Innovation & Transformation will be an expert in all aspects of digital strategy, operating model design, and implementation planning.

They will have lead responsibility for a number of strategic priorities, working closely with the Chief Digital and Information Officer and the Chief Medical Officer.


They will contribute to the digital strategy, business plans, and its implementation of the strategic portfolio of programmes ensuring performance targets are met & benefits realised.

The post holder must have in-depth professional knowledge acquired through professional training and experience spanning over 10 years.

This is a six-month secondment extendable to 12 months.

  • Direct line management and day to day management of Digital Innovation & Transformation Team, including appraisals; sickness absence; disciplinary and grievance matters; recruitment and selection decisions; personal and career development; departmental workload and allocation.
  • Plan and organise a broad range of complex activities pertaining to the NHS STW Digital Strategy and services, contributing to mediumlong term strategy, developing, contributing to, and adjusting corporate policies and procedures where required.
  • Provide managerial, professional & strategic leadership across the NHS STW ICS and ICB. Responsible for introducing, adapting, and improving digital information systems.
  • Manage the development of business cases, options analysis, and the procurement of key systems.
  • Analyse performance of areas under review as part of the Digital Strategy to ensure anticipated performance efficiency targets and strategic objectives are met, often leading on the development of innovative solutions where expert opinion may differ.
  • Ensure development of members of staff through appraisal, objective setting and appropriate support for professional training.
  • Ensure that there are strong links with other clinical and corporate directorates.


NHS Shropshire Telford and Wrekin is responsible for planning and buying a wide range of health and care services for the whole of Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin.

These include GP and primary care services, hospital care, community healthcare and mental health services.

We also have a duty to monitor these services to ensure they provide a high level of care and are value for money.

We are part of Shropshire Telford and Wrekin Integrated Care System.

This means we work closely with our partner organisations across the county, such as the two local authorities, the 51 GP practices, the hospitals, and the voluntary and community sector, to plan and deliver joined up health and care services.

Working closely together, in a more joined-up way, means we can have closer links to our patients so we can develop more personalised local services which will improve the lives of our residents and reduce inequalities.

  • Be a specialist in Digital Innovation & Transformation, advising the NHS STW on best technologies and architect solutions with a holistic IT method to achieve greatest economies of scale to benefit all Trust Departments.
  • Actively lead the detailed planning of the NHS STW's Digital Strategy, required investment and infrastructure refresh allowing budget and investment planning.
  • Lead the various teams in exemplifying the principles of customer service, productivity, performance, efficiency and responsiveness to users, NHS Partners, and all IT Team members.
  • Lead the innovation team(s) and embed best practice for the delivery of services.
  • Identify service improvement opportunities and develop plans in order to deliver them.
  • Maintain active knowledge of industry trends and best practice and lead the NHS STW through migration to enhance its IT capabilities.
  • Responsible for the proactive planning and testing of software and hardware infrastructure upgrades.
  • Lead the operational team(s) to achieve agreed objectives with freedom to do this in own way working with broad professional policies and often acting without reference to manager.
