The department of gastroenterology of University Hospitals Sussex at St Richard's and Worthing Hospitals is looking to further expand our close-knit, enthusiastic team who are passionate about delivering high quality care and innovative service development.

We are seeking to appoint a substantive consultant colleague who is independently proficient in ERCP.


Our new colleague will work predominantly Worthing Hospital with the potential to also support HPB endoscopy services in St Richard's Hospital, Chichester.

Worthing Hospital sits 200m from the sea with a backdrop of the South Downs National Park.

It is 20 minutes west from the vibrant city of Brighton and Hove and 30 mins east of Chichester harbour, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty as well as the beautiful sandy beaches of the Witterings.

Worthing also benefits from direct train links to London, Brighton, Gatwick, Chichester, Portsmouth harbour and Southampton airport.


Our new colleague will be joining our team during an exciting period in our organisation following the recent mergers that created University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust, now the fifth biggest Trust in England.

The Trust also hosts Brighton and Sussex Medical School. Worthing Hospital is also a training site for the regional Endoscopy Training Academy, founded in 2002 within our Trust.

  • Provision of diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy services including ERCP in University Hospitals Sussex in Worthing and St Richard's Hospitals
  • Support the department of gastroenterology in providing outpatient services in University Hospitals Sussex at Worthing Hospital
  • Contribute to the provision of care on our gastroenterology inpatient unit in Worthing Hospital
  • Contribute to the out of hours GI bleed rota and weekend gastroenterology inpatient unit on calls; please note there isnoGIM on call responsibilities in this role

The clinical duties of the post include the following:

  • To provide high quality care to patients on acute wards in partnership with consultant colleagues
  • To provide gastroenterology outpatient clinics service
  • To perform diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy including ERCP
  • To participate in on call duties as agreed between the appointee and clinical director for gastroenterology
  • To take a shared role in the development of the gastroenterology service in conjunction with the management team and consultant colleagues in gastroenterology
  • To participate in medical care and clinical governance
  • In due course, to provide professional supervision, direction and training to the junior medical staff
  • In due course, to participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
  • To attend meetings of the department of gastroenterology and division of medicine

On-call commitment:

  • 1:11 Monday-Thursday out of hours GI bleed on call for St Richards and Worthing hospitals
  • 1:10 weekend cross site GI bleed on call combined with targeted gastroenterology inpatient ward rounds and emergency floor inreach
