    About the role

    The Departmental Manager (DM) is the key Professional Services (PS) role in the department. They will be responsible for the operational infrastructure and PS service provision for the department and, as such, will have oversight of the support for Teaching, Research, HR, Finance, Budgets, Planning, Estates, Health and Safety, Security, IT, and the wider administration needed to run an academic department. They will achieve this via leadership and management of the departmental PS Team, as well as liaison with service delivery partners in Central Service areas. They will ensure that systems and processes are fit for purpose as well as that UCL, Faculty and Departmental policies and strategies are always implemented.

    The appointee will advise and assist the Head of Department in identifying short-, medium- and long-term strategic objectives and priorities, providing relevant background data as appropriate to support decision making processes. Other duties include - To line manage and develop the PS team - To regularly review the departmental service structure with a view to ensuring an efficient and effective service, and to manage changes to that structure. - To set budgets, monitor in-year expenditure and communicate positions within the Department to ensure that annual financial performance targets are met. - Oversight and organisation of committees to ensure effective governance within the Department. - To ensure the provision of effective undergraduate and postgraduate teaching support within the Department. –-To liaise with funding bodies, sponsors, suppliers and UCL service providers to ensure maximisation of the Department's funds and resources. - To ensure the provision of effective support for external funding applications and administration of research awards.     About you

    The successful candidate will have: - A proven track record in administration and management within a HE or similar large, complex organisation. - Experience of effectively line managing and developing teams and individuals, including leading and embracing change. – Experience of maximising service delivery including when it is not via their own team - The ability to effectively organise and prioritise a varied and demanding workload, using methodical approaches, and paying close attention to detail. – The ability to provide support for data-driven, evidence based senior management decisions as part of a Leadership Team. - The ability to communicate on complex issues to other staff and students. - An understanding of the value of equality, diversity and inclusivity initiatives.
