    Job overview

    University Hospitals Sussex is a regional teaching hospital across several sites following recent merger of 2 large trusts.

    This is an exciting opportunity to be part of our neuropsychology team providing specialist clinical psychology and neuropsychology input and leadership to Donald Wilson Neurorehabilitation Centre.

    As part of the neuropsychology department you will joining a vibrant, highly experienced and supportive team. You will have opportunities to grow your skills and be supported in further training needs. You will also have access to a wider Sussex based peer support network.

    Main duties of the job

    • To provide a specialist clinical neuropsychology inpatient service to persons presenting with neurodisability (including ABI and stroke) admitted to Donald Wilson House, Chichester.
    • To lead on specialist capacity assessments and behavioural management plans for patients within the unit
    • To offer advice and consultation on neuropsychological and psychological care to members of the multidisciplinary team, allied professionals, carers, and significant others.
    • To provide a specialist clinical neuropsychology assessment and rehabilitation service to adults with neurodisability (including ABI and stroke).
    • To identify and implement audit and research projects within the area served by the team/service.
    • Involvement in the training, continuing professional development and supervision of other qualified clinical psychologists, trainee clinical psychologists, assistant psychologists, and other healthcare professionals.
    • To assist and lead in service development initiatives within the Neuropsychology department and the wider Neurosciences Service.
    • To provide clinical leadership within the neuropsychology pathway at Donald Wilson House and within St Richard's hospital.

    Detailed job description and main responsibilities

    Clinical

    • To provide specialist assessment of adults with neurological conditions and ABI using appropriate methodology and to integrate this information into a psychological formulation.
    • To lead on and conduct complex capacity assessments using appropriate methodology and to integrate this information into formulations and management recommendations as appropriate.
    • To formulate and deliver specialist psychological and neuropsychological treatment and rehabilitation.
    • To consult with and provide specialist guidance to significant others including carers and families of service users.
    • To communicate in a skilled and sensitive manner, information concerning the assessment, formulation and treatment plans of service users under the care of the service and to monitor progress during the course of
    • To attend interdisciplinary team meetings and provide a specialist psychological perspective in the interdisciplinary formulation of appropriate treatment plans. To be involved in or oversee the implementation of these plans in collaboration with other staff.
    • To lead on and undertake psychologically based risk assessment and risk management for service users and provide advice on the psychological aspects of risk to other professionals involved in their care.
    • To take substantial professional responsibility and exercise autonomous judgement regarding clinical professional practice.
    • To manage own work-load appropriately and autonomously and meet deadlines within the framework of the service policies and procedures.
    • To use electronic methods of communication for the efficient transfer of information within the service, complying with Trust and national guidelines on the confidentiality of information.
    • To make available and enter, where appropriate, information required for the service databases including activity measures and patient data taking into account issues of confidentiality and consent.
    • To use computer literacy skills in order to obtain clinical and service information electronically.
    • To develop and use complex multi-media materials for presentations in public, professional and academic settings.

    Teaching, training and supervision

    • To participate in regular clinical supervision.
    • To keep up to date with the CPD and continued registration requirements of the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
    • To support the professional development and knowledge of members of the interdisciplinary team through formal teaching, training and other appropriate learning activities related to neuropsychology.
    • Where appropriate, to provide teaching support to students of relevant clinical psychology courses.
    • Where appropriate, to participate in the training and/or clinical supervision of other clinical psychologists, neuropsychologists, trainee clinical psychologists and assistant psychologists, ensuring that the individual acquires the necessary skills, competencies and experience to provide an appropriate level of neuropsychological care.
    • Where appropriate, to participate in the provision of clinical placements and supervision for trainee clinical psychologists, ensuring that trainees acquire the necessary skills, competencies and experience to contribute effectively to good neuropsychological care through the assessment and evaluation of such competencies.
    • To contribute to the specialist training of other healthcare professionals on issues of relevance.
    • To be responsible for regularly consulting to and advising colleagues from other professions on psychological assessment and treatment methods.
    • To teach, advise and consult with carers and community groups.
    • To provide specialist consultation to non-statutory organisations involved in the care of service users.

    People Management and Development

    • To manage the workloads and take professional responsibility for other qualified clinical psychologists, neuropsychologists, psychology trainees and/or assistant psychologists.
    • Where appropriate, participate in the recruitment of other clinical psychologists, neuropsychologists, and assistant psychologists.
    • To lead as a specialist clinician in the development of a high quality, responsive and accessible clinical psychology service including advising both service and professional management on psychological issues and taking responsibility for implementing such developments as agreed.
    • To contribute as required to the planning and development of operational policies and delivery of psychological services through undertaking agreed-to project work.
    • To exercise responsibility for the systematic governance of your own practice.
    • To initiate and conduct neuro psychologically based research relevant to the care of adults with neurological conditions, as agreed with the Lead Consultant Neuropsychologist(s).
    • To develop and maintain effective communication links with the NHS, Social Services and other agencies, as appropriate, who are working with people who have neurological conditions or ABI.
    • To undertake any other duties at the request of the service managers which are commensurate with the role, including project work, internal job rotation and absence cover.
    • Implement British Psychological Society professional practice standards and other evidence-based practice guidelines.
    • Contribute towards meeting the targets achieving University Hospital Sussex objectives regarding clinical governance.

    Patient Care Delivery

    • To work within the Code of Ethics and the relevant professional practice guidelines of the British Psychological Society and the professional guidance framework of the Trust.
    • To contribute to the development and maintenance of the highest standards of professional practice, through active participation in internal and external CPD training and development programmes, in consultation with professional and service managers.
    • To contribute to the development and articulation of best practice in by continuing to develop the skills of a reflective scientist practitioner, taking part in regular professional supervision and appraisal and maintaining as active engagement with current developments in the field of clinical psychology and related disciplines.
    • To maintain the highest standards of clinical record keeping including electronic data entry and recording, report writing and the responsible professional self-governance in accordance with professional codes of practice of the Health Professions Council, British Psychological Society and NHS Trust policies and procedures. To be responsible for relevant data collection on work activities, as required.
    • To participate fully in supporting the activities of the psychology profession within the Trust, including attending relevant meetings.
    • To keep abreast of developments in clinical psychology and neuropsychology.
    • To undertake training as necessary in line with the development of the post and as agreed with line manager as part of the personal development planning process.
    • To achieve and demonstrate agreed standard of personal and professional development within agreed timescales.
    • To carry out such other duties as reasonably requested.
    • To contribute to a healthy and safe working environment by adhering to health and safety regulations and Trust policie.
