There is always something to get involved in.If you share our vision for' excellence in all that we do' , wed love you to join us An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced senior nurse to join the Ophthalmology Directorate on a permanent basis as our new Matron. We are looking for a dynamic and innovative individual who is as passionate about ophthalmology services as we are, to become part of our senior leadership team working as a triumvirate with the Clinical Director and Directorate Manager. The successful candidate will also be fully supported in their professional development by the wider senior nursing leadership team. Main duties of the job Applicants must be experienced as a Band 7 senior nurse, ideally within an ophthalmology environment, and possess excellent communication, interpersonal and leadership skills to be able to drive forward improvements in line with current operational and professional agendas. Candidates will be passionate about ophthalmic care and able to provide visible, compassionate and accessible senior leadership to support and develop the nursing team. Being able to work autonomously and with the multidisciplinary team to maintain a positive patient focused experience and environment is essential. A flexible approach to work is required as well as the ability to demonstrate resilience to manage varying challenges in this demanding role. You must be able to provide professional direction, advocating excellence in clinical practice at all times and participate in a senior nurse rota to provide senior nurse cover across 7 days. Cross site matron cover to support care of other surgical services may also be required and you will be expected to support colleagues within the matron team. Job description Job responsibilities The Matron will ensure at all times that the patient is at the centre of all our actions and act as a role model for clinical staff. The Matron has 24 hour accountability for the wards/departments/areas in their Directorate for the efficient and effective operational management of the nursing workforce, guaranteeing provision of high quality evidence-based nursing practice which will be delivered within hospital, community and outreach settings. The Matron will provide strong clinical leadership within the services and be highly visible and accessible to patients. Leading by example, the Matron will drive up standards of clinical care. They should have the responsibility and authority to get the essential components of care right for patients clean wards and departments, quality care, ensuring patients are treated with dignity and respect, resolving problems for patients and relatives and ensuring high standards are maintained and delivered throughout the services. They will have a particular responsibility to support the developments of Clinical Governance and Service Improvement, to modernise patient services and ensure the active involvement of patients and carers in the way services are developed, delivered and evaluated. The Matron will contribute to identifying and managing issues of poor performance, risk and complaints. The Matron will promote and share best practice and encourage personal development.     • Clinically credible with significant experience at senior nurse level in a relevant setting
    • Ability to manage conflict in the clinical environment
    • Experience of managing a clinical team including human resources management
    • Experience of managing difficult and complex personnel/people situations
    • Experience of policy critique and writing to ensure fit for purpose
    • Experience of successful budget management and evidence of achieving financial targets
    • Experience of leading and delivering significant programmes of change with an NHS setting
    Desirable
    • Experience of undertaking root cause analysis
    • Clinical experience within ophthalmology
    Skills and Knowledge Essential
    • Competent in IT skills and ability to operate Windows programmes and Microsoft Office
    • Evidence of participating in clinical audit
    • Knowledge of NHS Policies and strategies
    • Excellent presentation skills
    • Well-developed report writing
    • Excellent verbal briefing and communication skills
    • Able to command respect of multi-disciplinary teams

    Qualifications Essential
    • First level NMC Registered Nurse (Adult) (RN Child for paediatric roles, RM for Midwifery)
    • Degree in nursing studies or relevant clinical degree.
    • Masters level study, or equivalent specialist study / experience
    • Recognised management or leadership qualification or relevant experience
    Desirable
    • Masters degree or working towards in relevant associated subject
