Shift Leader (Chemical Manufacture)

A fantastic opportunity to join a leading global producer of advanced speciality chemicals in a manufacturing leadership role.

  • Working at our Huddersfield site, you will be leading a team of shift operatives producing a range of reactive and formulated products in accordance with our standard operating procedures on a lower tier CoMAH registered Chemical Manufacturing Plant.
  • Responsible for managing, mentoring, and developing shift operations staff to ensure daily shift targets are achieved, in line with key performance indicators.
  • Reporting directly to the Production Manager, you will be expected to work autonomously and therefore will be responsible for daytoday operations, carrying out any necessary fault diagnosis, escalating and resolving issues as required.

  • Build an effective team by motivating and developing operations staff
  • Possess a strong underpinning knowledge of the QHSE standards required to operate in a CoMAH manufacturing site environment

Accountabilities:


  • Lead/manage a selfdirected shift team (24hr, 365day, 6 crew operation) with limited day to day management interaction due to shift pattern, coordinating labour and reactor priorities to achieve the production plan.
  • Liaise with the Production Management, Supply Chain and Quality group at regular intervals regarding production matters and shift attainment.
  • Operate in different areas of the plant as and when required to meet production demands, overlapping duties/responsibilities with the Shift Process Technicians and Shift Process Operator, assisting with plant operations where required.
  • Shift Incident Controller in the event of any emergency situation duties include implementing emergency procedures, accounting for all staff on the plant at the time, providing information to emergency service personnel and to provide assistance as requested in responding to the incident.
  • Compliance with operating procedures including ISO9001/14001, CoMAH & IPPC, process instructions, Engineering, and QHSE procedures. Ensure direct reports compliance with these systems.
  • Ensure safe working practices are adhered to on shift, primary issuer of safety permits to allow others to carry out engineering activities, including contractor management.
  • Coordinate and participate in maintenance activities and ensure engineering standards are maintained throughout the plant area, including both breakdown and planned engineering scenarios.
  • Conduct alarm & trip testing procedures, instrument calibration and other preventative activities such as lubrication of equipment.
  • DCS fault diagnosis and rectification. Close communication with the Plant Engineering team for continual improvement of the DCS system
  • Sampling the reactors and conducting inprocess analysis to ensure product will meet manufacturing specification. Simple fault diagnosis and rectification (maintaining analytical equipment to meet inprocess requirements)
  • Carry out training and development of new staff to ensure they are familiar with detailed operating requirements before validation.
  • Work closely with technical support / management staff in executing investigative or experimental programmes and in implementing change projects such as new product introduction.
  • Lead Continuous Improvement project teams (5S / Structured Problem Solving) with the aim of improving QHSES standards, OPEX/Process efficiencies.

Skills & Knowledge:


  • O-Levels/GCSE or equivalent in Maths, English and Chemistry or equivalent vocational qualification coupled with minimum 5 years' experience in a chemical manufacturing industry
  • Previous experience in operating an automated plant control system e.g. DCS is desirable
  • Previous experience of leading and developing a team
  • Use of computer systems (SAP, MS office and DCS) and numeracy / literacy skills (written and verbal communication skills)
  • Lean Principles / OPEX
  • Underpinning knowledge of Lean Manufacturing Techniques
  • Evaluation of plant data and identification of corrective action through structured problem solving
