    The Opportunity

Due to continued business growth, and increasing investor focus and interest in the decarbonisation of gases, we are seeking to recruit a senior consultant to work on and lead projects focussing on the growing biogas and biomethane ("green gases") sector. We require an experienced, technically focussed, consultant that can lead biogas and biomethane projects and promote knowledge of biogas and biomethane technologies and their development and application (including upgrade and conversion of biogas to biomethane, an understanding and appreciation of different substrate mixes and the technical and commercial implications, and the associated regulatory, policy and subsidies that drive growth) across the firm as well as be able to contribute to projects in related sectors such as bio-LNG, hydrogen and carbon capture.

We are seeking a well-rounded and technically qualified individual that can demonstrate their experience covering technical, environmental, economic, commercial and operational issues; or demonstrate that they have enthusiasm and drive to develop those areas where they have limited knowledge. The applicant should be broadly conversant with market standards in terms of key players (investors, developers, EPC and O&M contractors and main suppliers), contracting terms and indemnities, good practice design and specification, resolving construction and operational issues, principal regulatory considerations, and experience in delivering/advising on mitigations from a risk-focused perspective.

In addition to typical buyside and sell side technical due diligence and project development assignments, there will be an opportunity to play a role on mandates in corporate finance and energy economics. The candidate would provide technical insight and support to our strategy and economics team, particularly in relation to market entry strategies, market studies, and economic analysis on projects in, and related to, the biomethane sector. This could include but not be limited to regulatory frameworks, production targets, supports mechanisms, competitive landscape and techno-economic analysis.

The role will include, co-ordinating, producing & reviewing technical specifications, evaluating tenders, negotiating and writing contracts across engineering, procurement and construction and operations & maintenance contracts. Also you will review and providing technical and commercial inputs into business plans such as operating and capital costs and operational inputs (i.e. availability, capacity, yield and production targets etc.).

You will also regularly interface with our regulatory and economics teams to assist them in their work by explaining technical limitations of the technology that impact commercial and regulatory elements (such as lifecycle, substrate mix, processing capacity etc.).

There will also be the opportunity to undertake projects in other sectors where we have an established capability: natural resources, thermal power generation (energy from waste, biomass, biofuel), utilities (gas, water, electricity), for example.

At Arup, you belong to an extraordinary collective – in which we encourage individuality to thrive. Our strength comes from how we respect, share and connect our diverse experiences, perspectives and ideas.

You will have the opportunity do socially useful work that has meaning – to Arup, to your career, to our members and to the clients and communities we serve.

Is this role right for you?

We would like to speak with people who have:

  • Excellent technical knowledge of biogas, biomethane and green gases and the ability to apply this knowledge in a consulting setting.
  • Good technical knowledge of other related sectors such as bio-LNG, hydrogen, carbon capture and biofuels will be advantageous.
  • A good understanding of the economic, commercial, environmental and regulatory issues of the sector is required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills: ability to interpret and convey complex technical issues in simple form.
  • The ability to review and interpret contractual documentation from a technical and commercial perspective
