There is an exciting opportunity for a 1 WTE Band 6 Speech and Language Therapist to join our friendly team based at Brighton General Hospital. You will be part of a large dynamic team and have opportunities to develop your clinical skills with support from both specialist and advanced practitioners.

Post-qualification dysphagia training and experience is essential and you need to have had at least two years' experience in adult neurology if applying for the Band 6 role.

We have some flexibility to adapt the role to a Band 5 - Band 6 development post for the right applicant (please see band 5 job spec). These applicants would ideally have a minimum of 6 months experience working within their Band 5 role, or be able to demonstrate experience from a relevant clinical placement in the area of adult neurology.

Main duties of the job You will be working with patients who live across Brighton and Hove. The post holder will manage a varied community caseload, with adults presenting with both progressive and non-progressive conditions and a range of communication and swallowing difficulties. You will be supporting people with a range of conditions including: Parkinson's Disease, Dementia, Multiple Sclerosis, Motor Neuron Disease, Huntington's Disease, previous stroke, Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, and Primary Progressive Aphasias. You will also have the opportunity to shadow our dysfluency specialist SLT, and work alongside the specialist communication aid services. Our service works closely with MND, PD and MS Specialist Practitioners, and attend regular MDT meetings for patients. Job description Job responsibilities This is a job role summary:

a) To be a specialist therapist within the Adult Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) Service, providing a comprehensive, specialist clinical service to clients referred with communication and or swallowing difficulties.

b) To be an active member of the adult SLT service and a specialist resource, including liaison with other SLTs and other professionals external to the service in relation to specialist information, analysis and advice on continuing care

c) To comply with the standards and priorities laid down by the SLT service and Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust

• Registered member of RCSLT and HCPC
• Degree in Speech and Language Therapy (or recognised equivalent)
• Post graduate and experiential training in relevant areas
• Membership of relevant SIGs

Experience Essential

• Min. 2 years post-graduation in clinical specialism(s) in acquired adult disorders
• Post basic training and experience in dysphagia
• Interdisciplinary team working within acute and community settings
• Participation in provision of training to others
• Participation in student placements

Desirable

• Monitoring of service and clinical policies
• Mentoring less experienced staff

Skills Essential

• Specialist clinician able to demonstrate diagnostic skills and knowledge of appropriate assessment and management
• Excellent written and verbal communication including observation, empathy and listening skills
• Demonstrates ability to manage caseload independently
• Developing negotiation and conflict resolution skills
• Developing organisation, prioritisation, problem solving and planning skills
• Excellent analytical and reflection skills, demonstrates reflective practice

Desirable

• Ability to implement and monitor clinical audit and clinical outcomes scales within the team
• Presentation skills

Knowledge Essential

• Ability to monitor standards of practice, policies and protocols in accordance with clinical governance strategy
• Working knowledge of professional standards and policies related to clinical and management practice
• Understanding of the roles of other professionals relevant to caseload
• Knowledge of record keeping standards
