Job Purpose:


As the Head of UK CNI Operations, you will build and lead a dedicated support function for the infrastructure technology and data network which underpins how National Grid manages and maintains the Electricity Transmission Network across England and Wales.

The immediate to mid-term focus of the role is to build, develop and lead a highly capable support team to providing 24x7 support and engineering across the following:


  • Infrastructure (hardware, compute, storage, Virtualisation, OS & databases)
  • Data Networks
  • Security
  • Monitoring
  • Incident resolution
  • Asset, risk, audit and capacity management
  • Tooling and Automation


Longer term you will support the digital transformation and modernisation of the Electricity Transmission Network, whilst balancing cost pressures, performance standards and delivery of our regulatory commitments.

Your insights will empower us to deliver exceptional service, foster stakeholder relations, and responsibly manage resources in an industry that serves as a critical backbone to society.


Key Accountabilities:


  • Implement and maintain high standards of infrastructure support, ensuring effective operation and alignment with our business goals.
  • Collaborate closely with outsourced service providers to ensure seamless network operations and superior service delivery.
  • Drive the adoption of Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) principles and practices to enhance system reliability and efficiency.
  • Develop and oversee key performance indicators to measure and improve infrastructure performance and reliability.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement, encouraging innovation and efficiency.
  • Availability, reliability and security of CNI IT estate
  • Meeting Regulatory and license requirements
  • Strong leadership, running a diverse and inclusive team of engineers.
  • Financial management Contract and thirdparty supplier relationships

Knowledge, Experience and Technical Know How:

  • Longer term. you will support the digital transformation and modernisation of the Electricity Transmission Network, whilst balancing cost pressures, performance standards and delivery of our regulatory commitments.

  • Managing disparate high performing teams, supporting Critical National Infrastructure.
  • Strong senior managerial background with proficiency in analytical, decisionmaking, organisation, technical and strategic planning
  • Strong experience managing highly available, resilient and secure IT Infrastructures, including SDDC management, SDWAN management, incident management.
  • Working to develop teams into an SRE function using the principles of Infrastructure as Code, relentless focus on the reduction of toil and repeat tasks and deep root cause elimination.
  • Experience working on multiple project workstreams, to ensure transition into product is without negative impact to availability.
  • Financial management skills, budget management and investment models
  • Experience of working with and developing strong relationships with Business stakeholders, vendors and senior management
  • Experience of setting strategy and direction within an IT organisation

Qualifications:


  • Educated to degree level in Computer Science, OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Proven history managing SRE support functions.
  • Clear understanding and experience of IT best practice methodologies (ITIL)
  • Experience of setting strategy and direction for future system replacements, ideally CNI,
  • Understanding of the policies and procedures needed to operate and support CNI systems. ITIL Practitioner

What You'll Get:

A competitive salary between £75,000 - £90,000 - dependent on capability
