    Job summary

    An opportunity is available for a Band 7 Advanced Specialist Speech and Language Therapist for a Fixed Term / Secondment. This role works predominantly within the Brainbow Team seeing children and young people up to the age of 16 within the Outpatient setting, however, line management, peer support and supervision is provided within the Paediatric Speech and Language Therapy Team. There is scope for you to assist with Inpatient assessment and intervention for Brainbow patients, depending on your interests, knowledge and skills.

    The focus of assessment and intervention tends to be on speech, language and communication needs, however, there is also an element of behavioural feeding difficulties and dysphagia within the caseload. We welcome applications from SLTs from different clinical backgrounds, but with relevant experience and transferrable skills, as any training and development needs will be identified and a personal development plan agreed and supported.

    The post also has responsibility of line management of a dedicated Speech and Language Therapy Assistant.

    Main duties of the job

    To work as part of a multi-disciplinary team delivering neuro rehabilitation to babies and children who have an oncology related brain injury and who are under the care of the Addenbrooke's Paediatric Oncology Service. This service is provided within both Inpatient and Outpatient settings. The post holder will also liaise closely with Community Speech and Language Therapy Services and offer occasional Outreach Services to children at home and/or in educational settings.

    To liaise closely with Inpatient colleagues, lead on the development of SLT services within the area of specialism and to act as a resource for other Therapists in the area of expertise.

    Brainbow was founded in 2013 as the first dedicated Neuro-Oncology Rehabilitation Service in the UK. The service was established by three local East of England charities, founded by the parents of children with brain tumours. Brainbow was launched with the aim to ensure that all children with Brain Tumours reach their full potential. Over the past 10 years the department has grown and adapted to best meet the needs of the children and family it serves and is now a fully funded NHS service. Brainbow is a Multidisciplinary Team made up of a Clinical Lead, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy, Education and Clinical Psychology. The department is supported by a Service Manager and Administrative Assistant.

    Qualifications

    Essential

  • Recognised Speech and Language Therapy degree or equivalent
  • Health Professions Council Registration
  • Registered member of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists
  • Evidence of successful completion of advanced specialist short courses in paediatric communication, to level of masters or equivalent
  • Desirable

  • Member of Relevant Clinical Excellence Networks
  • Post-graduate paediatric feeding / dysphagia accreditation or equivalent
  • Experience

    Essential

  • In-depth postgraduate experience in specialist area of Paediatrics at an Advanced Specialist level
  • Proven competence in the independent assessment, treatment and management of complex communication disorders associated with a paediatric caseload
  • Experience in developing and delivering training to other professionals, including those in the education setting
  • Experience of providing clinical supervision and line management
  • Experience of advising / providing second opinions
  • Involvement in multidisciplinary working
  • Desirable

  • Experience of working with an Oncology caseload
  • Experience of working with a Neuro Rehab caseload
