    The Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ) is a global coalition of financial institutions committed to accelerating the decarbonization of the economy in line with governments' commitments under the Paris Agreement. Over 675 financial institutions from 50 jurisdictions have individually committed to the goal of net zero by 2050, in line with science-based pathways to limit warming to 1.5 degrees C. GFANZ was established in 2021 as a forum for delivering sector-wide solutions for net-zero transition, helping to ensure high levels of ambition are met with credible action that support transition globally. GFANZ works to develop the frameworks and tools that the global financial system needs to make progress on their transition objectives. As an integral part of progressing this work, GFANZ engages with a broad set of public, private and third sector bodies. This includes regular engagement with international organizations, international standard setters, and national policymakers across the G7, G20 and beyond.

    To support our work, we are looking for an experienced and effective policymaker to oversee our strategy and policy work on special projects including carbon markets. The role involves developing and implementing strategies to deliver on public policy priorities identified by our Principals Group, underpinned by extensive external engagement and robust technical work to ensure that we advance solutions that support decarbonization and climate finance objectives. The role would also involve input to several special projects, including – in the near term – our support for international work on enhancing carbon markets and accelerating coal transitions. The role will also involve managing a small number of analysts and investing in their development and effectiveness. The role will involve extensive external engagement and some international travel.

    We'll trust you to:

  • Develop and evolve a clear strategy for our work on special projects, including on carbon markets and coal transition, and to oversee day-to-day implementation through effective and timely stakeholder engagement and technical policy work;
  • Keep our leadership and wider secretariat updated on our work, and to run structured and effective outreach to a broad set of public and private sector stakeholders to ensure our work is well understood, informed and situated, and that we are working collaboratively with others;
  • Identify and pursue opportunities to secure progress through formal processes (COP, UNFCCC, G7, G20, standard setting), other global and national initiatives, and key climate finance moments;
  • Think creatively, broadly, and analytically about how to make progress on a set of critical decarbonization and climate finance challenges that are at the very complex end of policymaking;
  • Invest in and develop a small number of analysts to support you in delivering this portfolio of work;
  • Represent GFANZ externally at important external meetings, speaking and other events, and to therefore be very familiar with our broader work priorities and progress in delivering on those;
  • Expectations:

  • An existing literacy of transition opportunities and challenges, and how those intersect with public policy, including in relation to carbon markets, would be extremely valuable so as to hit the ground running in fast moving complex policy areas;
  • A demonstrated ability to show thought leadership and to develop and oversee deliver of a strategy to secure progress on complex policy topics, informed by effective stakeholder engagement and underpinned by rigorous independent technical policy analysis and critical thinking;
  • A track record of effective and strategic engagement on complex policy issues with a diverse set of stakeholders from international organisations and technical bodies, through national policymakers, financial institutions and the voluntary sector;
  • Experience of, or aptitude for, managing a small team to ensure we invest in their development and effectiveness and a collaborative approach to working across the broader global team;
  • Experience of representing an organisation at senior and technical levels, and at speaking events, meetings, and workshops would be beneficial.
  • Does this sound like you?
