    Job summary

    A vacancy has arisen for a highly motivated individual to join our well established team of operators within the Switchboard dept. at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary. The department provides a service to patients, customers and staff 24 hours per day, 365 days per year.

    The successful candidate will be responsible for providing an efficient call handling service as well as a requirements to handle emergency calls and alarm systems and be able to work speedily with accuracy whilst working on own initiative and have an excellent customer service manner.

    The candidate must be able to remain calm under pressure, work unsociable hours, including nights, weekends and public holidays. You will need to be flexible in your approach as there may be a requirement to work at short notice to cover absences and holidays.

    Main duties of the job

    To receive external/internal calls and redirect as necessary.

    In the case of an emergency fire call, the operator will follow set procedures making sure all relevant emergency staff are informed acting as liaison between the hospital and emergency services.

    To operate the internal bleep system which includes programming the bleeps and distributing to new doctors giving guidance to staff on usage.

    To operate the radio system and liaise with the appropriate personnel.

    To respond to attack alarms activated on the hospital site reporting alarms quickly to security.

    Monitoring Clinical Alarms across the hospital site and if activated, escalate to the Manager / Director on call.

    Activate a weekly "test" of the Cardiac Arrest call, using the bleep system.

    Job responsibilities

    To provide a 24-hour, 7 days a week service to include receiving and directing calls, assisting both the general public, CHS and Trust personnel.

    Dealing with telephone calls both internally and externally district wide. Operating pager systems and monitoring critical alarms and keeping associated records.

    Telecommunications staff are expected to be courteous and considerate at all times and have excellent customer care skills.

    Due to the nature of the job, confidentiality must be adhered to at all times. The post holder may be the only member of staff on duty and will need to use their own initiative and be responsible for the full range of duties.
