Senior Counsel / Senior Lawyer - Financial Services - can be based anywhere in the UK with travel to site once per month minimum


Our client is one of the UK's leading Financial Services organisations currently seeking a Senior Counsel / Lawyer to join their Retail Legal team.


You'll be a senior lawyer in the Retail Legal team reporting into the lead Payment lawyer to support the Payments business area, providing advice on all the legal issues, risks and developments on matters, projects and initiatives.


You'll use your expertise to help draft legal documentation such as terms and conditions, advise on the compliance of customer journeys, customer facing materials and communications in different distribution channels with payments and consumer law and regulation.

You'll also support the development of new products, services and processes from a Payments perspective.


You'll keep an eye on what's on the horizon for Payments by monitoring any changes in legislation, regulation and the wider market.

Using that knowledge and insight, you'll help shape our processes, products and ensure our policies, procedures and literatureevolve in line with changing requirements.

You'll work with the lead Payment lawyer to anticipate where future legal problems and issues are most likely to arise and to devise effective controls to mitigate them.


As a minimum you'll need to:

  • Be an England & Wales qualified solicitor or barrister with excellent academic and private practice credentials and/or in-house experience, gained within the financial services sector.
  • Have expertise in and experience of advising on law and regulation in connection with retail financial services products.
  • Have a solid understanding of, and experience of advising on, general contractual and consumer law, e.g. the Consumer Rights Act, and the legal and regulatory frameworks for financial services.
  • Have an interest in, and awareness of, Payments aspects of product propositions and processes, although you may not have worked in this area before.
  • Be able to build relationships across the business and become a trusted advisor, providing expert, commercially pragmatic, timely, succinct and costeffective legal advice.
  • Be able to consider matters from different perspectives, thinking beyond a narrow legal analysis and about whether something is right and fair for the organisation's customers.

It would be nice if you also had:

  • Experience of advising on Payments law and regulation, e.g. the Payment Services Regulations.
