Role/ Department:


Equity traders collate and distribute flows, morning headlines, research upgrades/downgrades and premarket indications of stock openings to the internal sales trading team.


The traders are tasked with trading all agency client orders and are responsible for delivering a characteristic high-touch client focused service.


Communication with the sales trading team is critical and the traders would be expected to keep a close eye on stock levels and moves, limits and stop loss levels.


The traders need a keen understanding of trading technology including the various algorithmic trading strategies available and when to employ them.


They also understand market structure and add value by using lit and dark venues in order to provide best execution to customers, in line with global regulations.

They are expected to understand the firm's trade reporting requirements.


The traders act as risk managers and ensure that no positions are carried overnight, particularly in the event of an error.

They are expected to keep up to date with changing regulations and should be compliant at all times.

This particular role will be focused on Small and Midcap equities, chiefly UK listed.


Trading experience within the UK market is preferred and the role would suit someone newly or recently qualified who is looking to make the next step in their career.

Experience of risk trading is advantageous but not essential, as Northern Trust operate an agency only model.


The key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Receive, confirm and understand instructions for client orders from our institutional, outsourced and Transition Management clients.
  • Seek out liquidity in hard to trade names leveraging relationships with the street for the benefit of our clients
  • Follow Best Execution principals and strategies to minimize the cost of trade implementation.
  • Liaise closely with Internal partners including Traders, Sales Traders and Operations teams globally on trading strategies and general updates on performance and market trends.
  • Assist the Sales Trading team with news flow, market wraps and communicating directly with clients regarding intraday updates and order status.
  • Working directly with our broker panel and our technology vendors to maintain both execution excellence and best execution
  • Understand the market structure of each market we trade in detail.
  • Maintain uptodate knowledge of applicable regulatory rules and responsibilities.
  • Become familiar with the systems we use and contribute ideas as we evolve and strive for better process and efficiency.

Skills/Qualifications:


  • Demonstrated knowledge of investments and the financial markets, with a UK Small and Midcap focus
  • Demonstrated knowledge of financial analysis, basic statistics and accounting
  • Analytical and computer literacy skills
  • A College or University degree and/or relevant proven work experience for a financial industry with organisational, leadership and management skills
