Role


As Head of Distribution Commercial and Policy you will provide commercial leadership in a rapidly evolving external environment with business-wide revenue risks and opportunities.


You will be accountable for oversight and governance of commercial policy, strategy, connection contract terms and commercial agreements that ensure compliance with our legal and regulatory duties and responsibilities.

You will have responsibility for the policy management of distribution connection offers including direct liaison with major customers and industry stakeholders.


You will be responsible for both the policy and commercial interface with National Grid Electricity System Operator, the commercial management of distribution connection offers (EHV-132kV).


You will lead our policy engagement with the Energy Network Association and UK/Scottish/Welsh government and other industry stakeholders/code governance managers for connections and the various public undertakings provided by SP Energy Networks.


You will manage and be responsible for our management of, and compliance with, industry commercial contracts/codes (e.g., Distribution Connection Use of System Agreement, Balancing and Settlement Code, Connection Use of System Code), and advancing our commercial capabilities.

The Distribution Connection Use of System Agreement is the contract through which we recover our allowed revenues


What you will be doing


Establish and lead the Distribution Commercial and Policy function, contributing to the delivering our business ambitions, ensuring ongoing development, succession planning, training and recruitment needs are met.


Lead a multi-functional cross discipline team, spanning all our commercial policy activities and providing strategic leadership in a rapidly evolving external landscape, providing guidance on emerging commercial and policy issues.


Own and develop distribution commercial strategies, policies, methodologies and templates, ensuring timely delivery, communication and governance, e.g., Connection Use of System Code, Connection Agreement Policy and Capacity, Distribution Use of System Code etc.


Provide strategic input and negotiation of commercial terms for bespoke contracts /agreements, as well as planning for ownership and preparation of 132kV connection offers and agreements, leading on customer liaison and National Grid Electricity System Operator interface.


Lead development, implementation and management of a 'Contract & Connections Database' for >4,000 SPD/SPM agreements/ contracts, (including liabilities and obligations).


Represent SPENs interests at senior industry, government and regulatory meetings, creating revenue generating opportunities and limiting SPENs commercial exposure arising from industry proposals.


What you will bring


Good knowledge of industry codes, policy process and governance and able to demonstrate input into policy development, implementation and management.


A track record of strong delivery, ideally in a relevant area of activity with a high level business planning, financial awareness and strategic thinking.


Effective leading and management of change in a complex environment and creating a culture of engagement and positivity will be key to the role.

  • High level analytical skills and advanced mathematical abilities.
