As the Head of the Permanent Way Design Team in our Transportation team, you will lead talented your Permanent Way Engineering colleagues, who are known for diversity of thought, expertise and knowledge.

In your role, you'll work independently and within larger multi-discipline workgroups, ensuring that leading and managing packages to completion within budget and programme.

You will use your influence to deliver high-quality rail projects driven not just by profit but also by doing what's right.


You will be based in the Glasgow office and commit to working in our Glasgow office - 3 days a week.


Your purpose:


  • Manage and lead a team of up to 8 Permanent Way Design Engineers; providing training, development and motivation to increase their confidence, competence and selfdevelopment.
Grow and advance talent within the organisation.

  • Be accountable for the delivery of projects within your team, to delight our clients and provide support to Markets and the Project Delivery teams.
  • Ensure you and your team achieves productivity targets, carrying out resource management activities across a portfolio of works.
  • Understand design procedures, change control, checking and review requirements, ensuring compliance with CDM design risk assessments, Business Management, HSE and Quality procedures.
  • Deliver projects for the rail industry (Permanent Way aspects of electrification projects in particular), ideally operating as a CRE(T) for design.
  • Contribute to development of the local market, building relationships with our clients and highlight opportunities in future projects relevant to Permanent Way.
  • Contribute to and in many cases lead the bid preparation and work winning process, ensuring we are getting closer alignment to our clients.
  • Provide support and be the regional focal point for integration of other Atkins design teams.

What you can bring:


  • Demonstrate experience in a similar role, including an aspiration to develop in line management (it is not necessary to have previous experience of line management, but have a desire to be an inclusive Line Manager).
  • Have the ability to work to time and cost budgets across a geographical portfolio. Managing different workstreams at a given time.
  • Have excellent communications skills.
  • Possess willingness to work with clients and their project teams.
  • Have a reliable and responsible attitude, pay attention to detail and have a flexible approach to achieve the best outcomes.
  • Demonstrate the ability to identify and input to activities in support of the wider business objectives that may draw upon skills in addition to those outlined above.
  • Be a resilient selfstarter who can inspire confidence in others.
