Job Title:
Strength & Conditioning Coach and Rugby Coach

Sherborne is seeking a well-qualified, enthusiastic and innovative professional to lead the Strength and Conditioning programme. The post holder will work throughout the age ranges to educate and enhance athletic performance with support from a number of qualified and dedicated colleagues who work within the new Sports Centre which opened within the past year, containing a state of the art fitness suite along with a dedicated performance gym - Our Story | Sherborne Sports Centre


Sport plays a big part in the lives of the boys and increasingly this is linked to their health and well-being plus their physical development.

All boys participate weekly, and most will represent the school in inter school fixtures on a regular basis.

The Head of Strength and Conditioning will also be pivotal in assisting in the development of our performance athletes; we have many boys involved in external representative pathways in rugby, hockey, cricket plus some of the more individual sports.

This hybrid role also includes time coaching rugby with an emphasis on forward play.

The post holder will be proficient in developing the more technical aspects of scrum and line out as well as other more generic principles of play.

Hours of Work:

During term time, to attend personally to such duties during such hours, including out of School hours, as the Directors of Sport may reasonably direct.

During school holidays, hours of work will be as required by the Director of Sport.


Salary:
Up to £40,000.00 per annum depending on skills and experience.

Salary will be paid monthly in arrears direct into your nominated bank account and will usually be reviewed annually in September.


Holidays:

Apart from the times during the School holidays when required to work, such as prep school hockey camps, school tours etc., all Sherborne School annual holidays may be taken.

Holiday cannot be taken during Sherborne School term time. Attendance will be required on any Bank Holidays that fall during Sherborne School term time.


Main Purpose:

Toorganise, manage and lead the Strength and Conditioning programme and deliver high standards of Rugby coaching within the School.


Duties - this is not intended to be a comprehensive list of the tasks that will be covered and other tasks will be undertaken at the direction of the Director of Sport.

Strength & Conditioning

  • Deliver a Strength & Conditioning programme in which pupils follow a structured system of physical progression appropriate to their maturation and training age.
  • Develop and improve the athletic development/physical literacy of Sherborne pupils via Third Form curriculum sessions, HPP, individual sessions and grouped sessions.
  • Aid in the rehabilitation and return to play procedures of pupils in conjunction with the school's health team.
  • Provide ongoing CPD to enhance coach/teacher knowledge of athletic development.
  • Promote the safeguarding and welfare of children, specifically by ensuring all matters relating to Health and Safety is paramount in Strength & Conditioning sessions.
  • To contribute to the School's aims and objectives in promoting and marketing Sherborne School in general to a wide range of stakeholders, this will include visits to/host Prep Schools.
  • To support the process of Sports Scholarship selection and recruitment, specifically via and fitness testing.
  • In all contacts the successful applicant will be required to be a good ambassador for Sherborne School as well as maintain constructive relationships.

Athletic Development

  • Design and develop athletic development training programmes that reflect the needs of the sport and the longerterm athletic of the individual in line with the pupil's sporting and educational programme.
  • Assist in further develop the High Performance Programme (HPP), which provides multidisciplinary support to those who demonstrate commitment to their athletic development.
  • Carry out appropriate monitoring and physical profiling to provide a central record of athletes' progress; to inform training prescription, goal setting and feedback to pupils and coaches.
  • Liaise with relevant professional academies to deliver extensive support through individualised programming to our high performance athletes.
  • Liaise with the Medical Centre/School Physiotherapists in the management of injured players within the return to play protocol.

Rugby Coach

  • Coaching boys rugby during the Michaelmas Term with an emphasis on forwards.
  • Responsible for midweek coaching during games afternoons and managing team for inter school fixtures, usually on Saturday afternoons
  • The Coach must plan and implement training sessions across the term with a view to developing
