We currently have an exciting vacancy for a receptionist to be based at Ilkeston Community Hospital.

We are looking for a receptionist who is able to provide an effective reception service using verbal and written communication to liaise with patients, relatives, staff and external agencies to support the delivery of an efficient patient service

We are a friendly and supportive team, who are happy to support our colleagues and other teams and services.

We provide support and advice to all visitors and patients and ensure their time within our hospital always positive.


To be responsible for the Hospital switchboard and reception area liaising with members of the general public and other departments within the hospital.

Provide a friendly, helpful and professional service dealing with enquiries from patients including making appointments.


To provide comprehensive clerical duties within the Hospital centre to include preparation of daily/monthly statistical information, cash handling and banking, stationery and supplies ordering and general administrative support.

To ensure all issues relating to the maintenance of the site is co-ordinated with appropriate services within DCHS.

To support and comply with all health and safety, fire, infection control policy/procedures/legislation in conjunction with the appropriate department/advisors.


Our purpose is to provide community health services to a patient population of over one million people in Derbyshire and Derby, as part of Joined Up Care Derbyshire.


We employ around 4,200 substantive staff, caring for patients in 11 community hospitals and more than 30 health centres, as well as in clinics, GP practices, schools, care homes and, increasingly, in people's own homes and via virtual consultations.


During the pandemic response we have led the implementation of public vaccination centres in collaboration with partners across health and social care.

  • Provision of general reception duties including greeting, signposting and providing help to the general public in order to ensure delivery of a customer based service and excellent 'front of house' image
  • To operate the switchboard and manage telephone enquiries ensuring calls are answered in a timely and professional manner and to provide an efficient message taking service in order to ensure an effective communication system is in place
  • To provide a post room function for the building, including the distribution of incoming mail and processing outgoing mail, both internal and external, to ensure that all mail is dealt with efficiently
  • Provide support to health professionals by making appointments for a range of services including podiatry, orthotics and orthoptics
  • Maintain effective cash handling and banking procedures ensuring all monies are recorded, receipted and banked and petty cash issued in accordance with local procedures and the trusts Standing Financial Instructions
  • To provide routine clerical and admin support for the site including word processing, faxing, photocopying, collating documents, ordering equipment, stock control, reporting maintenance problems
  • To act as Nominated Officer of Fire for the site and fire warden in the event of fire alarm activation
  • To undertake CPR, defibrillator and first aid training as required and to act in accordance with trust policies and procedures
  • To comply with Infection Prevention and Control guidelines and policies and to deal with body fluid spillages according to trust procedures
  • Responsible for ordering and monitoring stock and receipting and recording deliveries
  • To undertake room bookings ensuring meeting rooms are prepared for use on a daily basis
  • Responsible for opening and closing the building and reception area as required
  • To collate information for daily and monthly statistics as required
  • To act as initial point of contact for patients and visitors wishing to make a complaint, resolving issues where possible, referring to the formal procedure where appropriate or redirecting the complaint to another member of staff
  • To comply with Health & Safety guidelines and policies and report incidents and any risks in own area of work
Patient Care

  • To be the first point of contact for patients/visitors to the site and provide nonclinical information as required.
  • To arrange clinical appointments, using the appropriate IT system, in line with procedures and Data Protection
