    We are seeking individuals like you to become part of our team as a Residential Practitioner.

    At Adel Beck, we provide care for 24 young individuals aged 10 to 18. These young people come to us after legal proceedings, being remanded, or sentenced to custody, or because they require secure accommodation for their own welfare or that of others.

    Residential Practitioners play a crucial role in the daily lives and future prospects of the vulnerable young people at Adel Beck, who may have intricate needs and exhibit challenging behaviors.

    • Level 3 Diploma in Residential Child Care (or equivalent), or willingness to attain the qualification within a reasonable timeframe (course fees covered by us)
    • Experience supporting children or young people with additional emotional/behavioral challenges – may derive from work experience, volunteering, student placements, or personal background

    Job Description

    Job Purpose

    Under the supervision of the Senior Residential Practitioner and Team Manager, take a leading supportive role in delivering a safe and secure care service for children and young people in compliance with relevant regulations, standards, and guidelines. Actively engage with young people to assess their needs and promote attitudinal and behavioral changes through positive interactions embracing a pro-social, restorative, and solution-oriented approach.

    Responsibilities:

    • Help create a safe and stimulating environment for young people's development
    • Support young people by recognizing their individual preferences and interests, exposing them to diverse experiences, and facilitating informed decision-making whenever feasible
    • Provide day-to-day primary care tailored to individual needs and address occasional requirements such as healthcare appointments
    • For young individuals with disabilities and complex needs, offer appropriate personal care including bathing, toileting, dressing, changing, and feeding
    • Adhere to medication administration policies, accurately documenting and verifying drug administration
    • Plan and coordinate daily activities as well as special events and celebrations
    • Participate in excursions and a range of physical activities with young people
    • Work directly with young people following agreed individual programs and strategies (e.g., anger management, self-esteem)
    • Handle behavior in a firm and positive manner and if necessary, be capable of safely restraining a young person post-appropriate training
    • Support young individuals in maximizing educational benefits
    • Assist young individuals during transitions to other settings
    • Consult meaningfully with young people and their families
    • Perform domestic duties to maintain high standards within the home, including cleaning, meal preparation, laundry, and decoration
    • Educate young individuals on essential life skills for successful independent living
    • Be accountable for developing, reviewing, and amending care plans, risk assessments, file maintenance, and other administrative tasks
    • Manage young people's and departmental finances per policies and procedures, ensuring accurate transaction records
    • Participate in and contribute to meetings, highlighting relevant issues to your superiors and colleagues
    • Demonstrate effective communication, both written and verbal
    • Adhere to policies, procedures, and team decisions
    • Plan shifts efficiently, ensuring task completion and maintaining shift activity records. Collaborate with colleagues for an efficient and effective service delivery
    • Collaborate with senior management within the home to organize and plan short and long-term provisions for the children and young people
    • Generate daily records to meet statutory and policy requirements
    • Prepare reports for statutory reviews and other meetings
    • Liaise and negotiate with other professional entities involved with young individuals
    • Contribute to the development of in-house policies and procedures
    • Engage in necessary training and development activities to stay updated on knowledge and skills
    • Undertake other duties as required by the role
    • Comply with Leeds City Council policies, procedures, and staff instructions, including health and safety protocols
    • Promote and uphold Leeds City Council's equality policies and work in an anti-oppressive manner

    Qualifications

    • NVQ/QCF, Health & Social Care (Children & Young People) Level 3 or working towards and achieving within 12 months of appointment

    Essential Requirements It is crucial that candidates can demonstrate the following criteria for the role. Only candidates meeting all essential requirements will be considered for interview:

    • An aptitude for assessing and evaluating young people's individual needs and those of their families
    • Ability to collaborate with staff at all levels, working as a team member and liaising with other professionals
    • Demonstrate effective written and verbal communication skills (Written exercise on the interview day)
    • Flexibility to work on a shift basis, including weekends, bank holidays, and sleep-in duties
    • Capacity to maintain records and generate reports
    • Familiarity with the 1989 Children Act and relevant legislation
    • Understanding of issues relating to Looked after Children
    • Respect for young people's confidentiality rights
    • Basic computer literacy
    • Minimum qualification requirement: Level 3 Diploma for the Children and Young People's Workforce. Existing qualifications remain valid, and there is no need for requalification. If lacking this certification, candidates must register for the course within 3 months of being appointed
    • GCSE level education or equivalent
    • Recent work experience in the last year with young people facing emotional/behavioral challenges, whether in a paid or voluntary capacity in settings like children's homes, social care establishments, schools, youth services, or similar youth-focused services
    • Ability to thrive in a challenging and dynamic environment
    • Experience in preparing and drafting reports
    • Handling petty cash transactions

    • Legally, personnel within a children's residential setting must be 4 years older than the oldest child/young person. Hence, as Leeds City Council's residential homes cater to individuals up to 18 years old, applicants must be 22 years or older
